Hi there; I use the previous version Canon, the SX220HS, and it has very fine image stabilization & sharpness at the end of the telephoto range. The Panasonic & Sony were the rivals I looked at at the time as well. If I were to buy one today, I'd probbaly go for the Sony, although it does rather over sharpen its images, on the built in settings. If you don't pixel peep & view images at desktop sizes, then it looks to be a great camera, with high ISO, 800, being as good as I've seen for a superzoom compact.

Good luck, BJ

A smaller alternative to an SLR and which might fit within your budget is the Nikon Coolpix P7700 which replaces the Nikon P7100. This model is aimed at the experienced photographers.

This camera has quite a few features and can produce excellent images with lots of detail and good color. The biggest disadvantage this camera has is the slow image processing.
