The Sigma 70 - 180mm Macro lens is a very good lens for close up work. On the other hand, i have achieved some very sharp good quality shots from using a set of extension tubes.
Pop a set of these on any lens and you can get as close as you like.
The only draw back, is that you have to manually focus on your subject but never the less, it is still possible to get outstanding results.
Check out my snakes, fly and caterpillar for yourself. All were taken with a Sigma 135 - 400mm lens on full extension, full set of extension tubes manually focused.

Canon's 100mm USM macro lens has a good reputation (I own one myself).

Mark is absolutely correct, the Canon 100mm 2.8 lens is one of the best on the market. You can pick one up for around £300 NEW!

First off as mark implies is correct. Though I own NIkons, Closeup get a MACRO not one of those varible xx-xxx mm macros.
If you want macro then buy macro. at 1:1 ratio.
Their is many to choose from and I reccomend you stay with Canon brand that was designed for use with your camera foremost.
I own several aftermarket lenses but I found the MFG brand works best.
Some will suggest to you the 80-200 with a.. was 5D filter that makes it like a macro but hey again another screw on device. (it will work but not the real way to do things.)
Cheers!
