can anyone help me in choosing a lens ,
my brother is a wave sailor windsurfer
and wants me to photograph the next comp
but I would also like to use it for my trip to vietnam
I have a canon 30D and so far am a little confused with the posts I have been reading
I know canon L series is the best but also most expensive
so any suggestions would be appreciated brand, type, zoom?
i have been looking a the canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 ,
can anyone recommend anything that compares but a little cheaper?

Generally the Sigma and Tamron alternatives are cheaper than the Canon equivalent.

Hi sunbird,
There is a big diff, when is his next comp?
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM £399.99
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG (Canon AF) £179.99
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro (Canon AF) £99.99
My setup is new to me but will take it up to our local lake and give a try out on whatever is up there.
Canon 400D
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro.

thanks Jim
I had a look at a camera store today,
the general opinion is the image stabiliser on the canon
is great for hand held shots and also faster, therefore giving much sharper images,
so I'm leaning towards the canon 70- 300mm, his next comp is the 28th september.
thanks again Janelle

Your more then welcome Janelle, I most admit I would love the IS lens too but sadly will have to wait a while for this to happen
Had an hour at the lake after work and the sun was out for a change took some pics and am happy with them so will be using this combo for a while.
