I have also found www.photoincident.com/photorecovery/ to recover lost or deleted photos which is cheap, works ok and shows you a preview of the pictures JPG that it can recover before deciding if you wish to pay just for the recovery (a few euros), so you do not need to pay for all the package that you will only use once (how may times, have to lost photos?)
Just my advice.

It’s very simple to recover deleted photos using a powerful Photo Recovery Software called Remo Recover Photo (Windows). You need to just install the software and connect the device from which images have to be recovered to that system. If it is a memory card from which images have to be recovered then in that case, you need to just connect the memory card to the system through a card reader.
The software is capable of recovering lost/deleted photos from a fixed hard drive, camera memory cards such as SD, XD etc., and also external USB drives.
The software performs digital image recovery in a few moments and doesn't overwrite data as it is a read only application. In fact, the interface itself is so intuitive, that you don't have to read long boring manuals, and guides to understand it. It does image recovery in just three steps, scan media, select images, and click recover! And all the required images are recovered.
Software is easily affordable and powerful compared to other software’s.

Don't ever buy software by judging it by its price sometimes a software with low price can recover data which can't be recovered by software with high price.
So please try the demo version of the software first. Using demo version you will get the preview of files. In my opinion try "Kernel for FAT and NTFS". You can get the trial version from http://www.digitalphotorecovery.net/

True. I keep a couple of free image recovery programs on hand and between the two of them they always seem to get the job done quite well.
