I`ve got a canon Eos 400D with a EF 70-300 IS USM lens. At at full focal length [300mm] the images are a little soft.The best settings are F5-8 and 1/250-500 for the sharpest images.I have also moved the sharpness up to seven in the main menu.Is there anything else I can do or is that the best for this lens.

Depending on what the subject is, use a tripod or other camera support, rather than hand-holding. You could also increase the ISO speed to give you a faster shutter speed.

Thanks......I`ve just tried it and it`s a lot better if I up the ISO.Should I leave the IS on if I use a tripod?

No, turn the IS off when the camera is mounted on a tripod.
