Presentation of Figures

US writer, photographer and translator Mark OSTROWSKI (New Jersey, 1971 / mark ostrowski) will present his new book Figures on December 15th at 8 p.m. at the Cultural Centre in Pola de Siero, Spain. This photonarrative will be published by Madú Ediciones (www.edicionesmadu.com) and has received a grant for artistic creation from the Municipal Culture Bureau of Siero.

Figures is comprised of 61 black-and-white images, portraits of known people and also anonymous ones, roughly half of which are accompanied by a brief Spanish-language text: displays of gratitude and personal confessions are intermeshed with social critique and anecdotes about the picture-taking process, all of which is narrated in the easy-to-read, eye-opening style that was the hallmark of such previous works as Aldeanismos and Paraíso matorral.

As Tino Pertierra states in his prologue, in this book “there is a pact with the devil that infiltrates down to the most disturbing depths of the human soul. We are what we see, and we see what we are”. This is because, for the majority of the photos, Ostrowski has opted to work at extremely close range, using a visual language that is to the point and free from all artifice.

Introducing the author will be Jorge ALONSO MOLINA (Havana, 1954). His long professional career—which got underway in 1976—includes a stint as President of the Asturian Photography Federation from 1990 to 1996. Standing out among his publications is the catalogue to his "Prisioneros del Destino” (”Prisoners of Destiny") exhibition (2002). In addition to having won numerous awards, such as the Photographer of Asturias Award in 1987 and 1989, he has displayed his work in the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias, Sala Vinck of La Coruña and the Juan David Art Gallery in Havana, Cuba, among many others.

The publisher’s technical editor, Fernando Romero, will also be on hand to give his impressions of Figures.

Hope to see you there!
