I have been using a Coolpix 5400 now for several years, mostly for close up shots only (I use my Nikon D300 for everything else). I use it to take very close up images of parts of flowers layed out on background cloth whilst in fieldwork conditions (usually far from perfect!). This give excellent results and you can get right in close using the 1cm focal length.
I feel that it is time to find a replacement and the range of digital compacts is bewildering. My main criteria are good close up capability, hopefully down to 1cm, and excellent image quality. If it is water proof (or water resistant) so much the better as I use it a lot in the monsoon in Himalayan countries. I am really not interested in long zooms or gizmos like face recognition.
Sometimes I use the ring illumintor with the 5400, but I am not expecting a replacement compact to be able to be fitted with addition lighting (great if it could!).
Price is not really an issue - it is more important to get the right tool for the job.
