I currently have an EOS 300 and am new to photography but am trying to learn fast! I strikes me from the gallerys that people always seem to have their cameras on them come what may! I don't have the luxury of carting around me bag with lenses etc. all the time so was thinking of purchasing a digital. I've toyed with the idea of getting the EOS 350D but this would leave me in the same situation with lots of kit to cart around.

Therefore I'm looking for some advice as to whether it's worth purchasing a compact. What are the ups/downs other than the obvious (I am a beginner so apologies if this all seems very basic!) I have been looking at the Canon S80 - would this be a good place to start? Are there any other suggestions? Would you suggest that I'd be better holding tight and getting the EOS 350D and not worrying about a compact?

All suggestions/advice greatly appreciated.

I would go with the Canon S80....Cannot take any pics without having the camera with you at all times...S80 though not as small as others in its class...is still very pocketable...

The S80 is a very good camera which gives a great wide angle for something so small. It use's compact flash cards which is also a good as they are a very reliable card to have and to use. 8mp camera very nice only snag the slide to open and turn it on can go faulty easily if you dont look after it well.

The S80 is a great camera. the 28mm lens is a big plus, only thing I found was it is not a comfortable camera to carry in my pocket, just a bit too big, and image quality over ISO 100 is a bit noisy.
It's other real plus though is good manual controls.

The Fuji F11 is worth looking at if you don't mind its 36mm lens, and less manual control.
But it does have much better image quality at ISO 200 and above. plus it goes up to an impressive ISO 1600.

The new F30 goes to ISO 3200, but is not available for another couple of months.

The Panasonic FX01 due out next month sounds great and it does have a 28mm lens.
Although only goes to ISO 400 like the S80, but it's much smaller. It does have ISO 1600 but at reduced image quality, so that doesn't count in my book.

I was going to buy the F11 last week but I'm waiting for the FX01 and F30 to come out. They are my two favourites.
Performance for size they are both remarkable.

I have a camera just a touch smaller than the S80 now and I find it is just to awkward to carry around unless I have a jacket pocket to put it in. Height and width are fine, but I find thickness to be a problem. But that's a personal opinion, you might find the S80 perfectly comfortable.

I actually went to my local camera shop and tried all my shortlisted cameras in my pocket.
Crazy maybe? but that's how important size is for me. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Check out the info on these cameras, I think you'll be impressed.

If you keep the EOS 300 you'll have the option of both a portable and a full size as the need arises.

The Canon S80 uses SD Cards not Compact Flash.
