Full Version: Flash Over-exposure With Canon 300d

Hi,
I'm new to the site and looking for some advice.
I am using a Canon EOS 300D with 380EX flash. Far too many of my photos have very harsh over-exposed flash. Neither the camera or flash have any flash exposure compensation so I have no control but surely they should make a better attempt at the correct exposure. I try to bounce the flash where possible to reduce the harshness but obviously that is not always possible e.g. outdoors or when the wall/ceiling is coloured and I don't want a colour cast. Also the 380EX does not have a tilt so when shooting in portrait mode I can't bounce off the ceiling.
I have ordered a couple of flash diffusion products (Stofen Omnibounce and Lumiquest Pocket Bouncer) but have not received them yet so I haven't tried them. Even so, I still think the Canon kit should be perfectly capable of correct exposure most of the time when the flash is used in the direct position.
Can anyone shed any light (pardon the pun) on this ?
I have a vague re-collection of reading about flash exposure problems on digital cameras with a smaller sensor size (which the 300D has). Could that be the reason ? I would be surprised if that is the reason for the problem. If the flash exposure cannot be adjusted on the camera or flash I'm a bit stuffed !!

I am not familiar with this combo but here is a discussion of the problem. Appears you are not alone. http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00B1ba

The Stofen will help but the only way to get around this is to go manal, set your shutter speed to maximum flash will allow and then play with the aperture until the exposure is right.
