I have two D100's but have to agree with Mark that most folks buying today would be better off with the D70.
As for good settings to use, my best suggestion would be to hurry over to Thom Hogan's excellent site and order a copy of his
Complete Guide to the Nikon D100 eBook. It comes on a CDROM (a print shop can print and bind it for you easily if desired) and is hands down the best book available on getting the most out of your D100.
