The original vibrance of the photo has gone leaving the image looking a lot duller than the original is there a reason for this change ?

Were you viewing the original in a different colourspace e.g. Adobe RGB?
Web browsers use the more limited sRGB space, which may explain the duller colours.

I understand what your saying Mark thanks but with that particular image the variation is so marked and i havent noticed it so much on my other images

Try using the softproof option in Photoshop - that will give you a good idea of what'll happen when you save for the web.
I don't think it's anything to do with the Gallery itself...

Bridget, softproof allows you to see onscreen what your photo will look like in a certain colour space. It's useful for previewing how your image will be printed, for example.
