Hi!

I´m buying a new (5mpx) digicam and Sony´s F-717 is high on my shopping list. I know that many cameras are very capable of shooting great outdoor photos, but I want also a camera that can make good indoor photos. I know 717 has bright lens and quite good flash so i asume that it would be good indoors. Does anyone of you have experience of indoor shooting with 717?

ps. I´m also considering Coolpix 5400...BSS would help indoors without flash

If you want to take photos indoors without using flash, then you either need to use a tripod or buy a camera with a lens that has a fast aperture. The lens on the Olympus C-5050 Zoom, for example, has a maximum aperture of f/1.8. Using such a large aperture reduces the depth of field so that the background is thrown out of focus; this may be the effect that you want anyway.

I'm not sure what the largest available aperture is on the F-717?

Thanks for your fast reply mark!

F-717 has a lens with maximum aperture of f/2.0-2.4 so it should be good for indoor shooting. If I have urderstanded right, fast aperture means faster shutter speeds in lower lightning conditions and that means sharper photos. I hate indoor photos where people are "flashed" and background is totally dark. Sure I could raise iso setting to bring background alive but then noise comes around or photos are blurry because of shaking hands. Bright lens should help also with that, right?

I would still like to know if anyone has shooted indoors with F-717? :)

Yes, you have understood correctly - a wide open aperture of f/2.0 will give you faster shutter speeds than a smaller aperture, of say f/11. The F-717 sounds as though it should be fine for indoor work.

I use a 717 and I've been really pleased with it's performance. Here are a few tips...
When shooting indoors, you can set the aperture. I would recommend this if you are able to shoot a very still subject using a tripod.
We all know the 717 has a flash. It also has flash level settings as Low, Normal, and High.
Here is a little trick that works wonders.
Experiment with the flash on normal and take your shot indoors. You'll notice that it's got a very intense illumination... you can surely tell that a flash was used. To get a more soft look, diffuse the flash with a white paper towel covering the flash. You will want to try a few shots to get the best possible results. Keep in mind when shooting with the 717, there are a ton of settings you can adjust. I would try it on automatic first to get a feel for how the camera will adjust it's self to the light. If you are in a very dark environment, make sure that you have the Hologram AF turned on. Below is a picture that is an example. I diffused the flash with a regular beverage paper napkin.

Cheers!

Thanks for your very illustrative post Joe!

I can see a clear difference between those 2 photos and that flash trick is a good, cause flash does make faces look too bright. I also noticed that you used quite fast shutter there, cause those players are freezed even they are moving while playing. Not a bad result at all! Only thing I still think is that how to make background brighter when shootin indoors (raising ISO, but...) and still get a sharp photo?

The reason why I´m asking different things about F-717 is that photo shops here in "my city" don´t have Sony cameras (can´t understand why), so there is no place where I could test it and that IS sad. My only hope are these guys who make great camera reviews in their web sites and guys like you who bother to answer to my questions.

ps. nearly only things that makes me look also other cameras are the size and weight of F-717, cause I do "long-distance-cycling" (100 and 200km) at summer times and I want to have camera with me in the bag all the time. On the other hand F-717 has a great battery life and that is good thing when travelling.

with thanks,

Timo
