Has any one entered a photo contest through Picture.com? I entered a photo and was sent a letter saying I made to the semi finals and would be published. It seemed a little too easy. Any experiences would be helpful,

picture.com, poetry.com and a few others like that are all the same company. They're all a scam.
Everyone that enters something, gets a "wee you're a winner" and we're gonna put you in the book letter. The book costs waaaaay too much money and it's poorly put together. As well they constantly spam you with "Sign up for our awards ceremony to recieve your prizes" emails.. Which you're to recieve an award, the book, and all these nifty prizes in value over so many $$$ just send us $500+ to confirm your attendance at the seminar and to ship your awards if you cannot attend blah blah.
Don't waste your time with them, nor risk giving up your intellectual rights and ownership to your art.

Hi Mike,
I have submitted three times and twice made it to the semi-finals and once to the finals. I am a fairly new photographer with a long way to go. They do publish the books; but I think that is the way theymake their money.

Hi. I have looked at this site several times and the quality of photos is appalling. Even people sending in a snapshot of their dog get a first prize!
The books are published yes, but every single one that goes out is different! The same title can have thousands of different copies of it. What they do is send you a book that definitely includes your photo, plus a random selection of other people's entries.
My boyfriend entered the 'competition' with a genuinely fantastic photo, 'won' 1st prize, parted with around £70 and has never received a book at all.
Try contacting the company - the email address is not even real - it throws back an uncontactable message every time. You can call them, but expect no-one to ever answer !

If you cannot add to the discussion without using insults, perhaps you'd be better off at a different forum.
It's not "free advertising". picture.com, et al are marketing scams that remove your rights to creative control over your images as well as try to empty your pocketbooks with their conferences, trophies and books. If your image is placed in any of their books, you don't get a free copy, you have to purchase it. Your images are freely distributed throughout these random coffee table books, and you do not recieve any compensation for it and I have never seen any of these books in any bookstore. As a photographer and an artist, I would rather never sell a print than be associated with something such as these companies.

I got caught up in the scam. When my duaghter was first born I took a pretty nice shot of her smileing at 7 days old. My wife sent it in to Picture.com and we made the semi finals. We pre order the book (it was my daugther after all) and waited. 7 months later we receive another letter stating that our bokk would be shipping out shortly but our daughter's picture was not going to be in it. They had re-structered the book. Now I dod not want the book I had already paid for, and they supply you with no way of contacting them. After may google searches I found their office number. I waited on hold for 70 mins and it took me another 45 mins to convince them to cancle my order and send me the correct book.
After a year I finally received my book, and a new later stating that I was such a good photographer that they wanted more of my work and my new photos would be featured in the best of the year photos (They had not even seen anything yeat and they were already sayong that it would be in the book).
Please stay away from this scam

as many have replied, they publish in a book in the usa and ask you if you're interested in purchasing one...at inflated prices...they also hold conferences in the states and invite you over to join in...beware!

Hello everyone,
I have just registered with this site today. I am new to photography and like taking rural scenes. I submitted a photo to Picture.com and was told my picture has made the finals. I was obviously delighted. It looks like I have made a bad mistake. Can anyone tell me if there any good genuine photography competitions out there. I also have reached the finals with photolaureates.com. Are these a scam also? If they are I have a lot to learn!

To answer your question yes I did and they informed me that I won!
Also they stated that it would be published in an offical Book that they would sell to me for $75.00 US and I ordered 2 copies! They said it would be shipped as soon as they were printed and I of course believed them! After contacting them by Telephone to date NO one has picked up the phone and replied to my requests!
They believe thier above the law. I believe after reading this many of us whom have had problems we find a good Lawyer who will take on a Fraud case and sue the pants of these people!
Stand and be counted I will be the first to place my name on a legal document to fight for the rights of the real individuals who matter and that is Us.
Hope you agree and make this a fight the Giant.

I had my entire afternoon wrecked by that Photography.com group!! The only difference though is I suspected a scam and a friend emailed me and said it was a scam. I'm not a photographer, so why would I end up being a semi-finalist?? I'm a legend in my own mind!!! Why would I want a copy of a picture in some book with hundreds of other photos when I own the photo???? From what I have read on this site, the book costs $75 and who knows if your photo will be in it?? Thanks but no thanks. It would be hard to sue them though if the photo shows up in the book, because that is all they are promising. It would be nice to let them stand up and be counted though. If nothing else, the site should be closed down or undergo some kind of scrutiny. What a way to wreck a person's dreams.........................

Not to be rude but to all of you who called the contest a scam are way off. You should probably get your facts straight before you write things. I entered a photo and got put in the finals and then one the grand prize. I was skeptical for a while (my wife was also). About 3-4 months after i received a check for $1000.00. If picture.com is a scam i really don't know how they make money. I cashed the check and everything worked fine. Thanks, Mike... www.vettorephoto.com
