My lens has a removable tripod collar fitted on it, which I keep on the lens all the time even for hand held shots.....but I've been thinking could this possibly damage the lens or the collar by using it as a support for hand holding?

I don;t think so... if ur not swinging ur camera around holding on collar... I don't see why it should damage camera or lens.
