Hi,

I've always been interested in photography and I think i'm close to buying my first DSLR. I'm not sure how best to construct this thread so I'll just "carpet bomb" you with questions if that's ok!

Which Camera: I've read some reviews on the year old Canon 1000D (aka Canon Digital Rebel XS) and they all sound pretty good, do you think this is a good camera to start on or is there a newer model out? Is 10M Pixels enough?

Which Lens: Most of the cameras i've seen don't come with a lens - which is a good one to start with? I've been told Superzoom ones are a good choice to start? There seems to be a range of these too though for Canon and I don't understand all the lens specs at the moment. I'm not sure exactly what i'd be using it on but my favourite shots are of landscapes/buildings but I guess people are ok too wink.gif Not sure if this makes any difference to any decisions though.

Photoshop: I have PS Elements and I've played around a little with it and I'll also try and learn Photoshop. Is there a big difference between elements and the full version? Or is there a better package I should consider out there? (I use an iMac btw)

Other Bits: Is there anything I haven't really considered? One thing I wonder, which has put me off getting a DSLR for a while is when I'd use it. Do you go out specifally to take photos or do you just take the "big" camera out with you everytime you go out?

Thanks in advance!

Adam

Hello There,
Welcome to the digital Realm.
I'm not a pro but everyone starts somewhere and your interest in photography I will assume means you have been taking photos for a while.
Here are some of my thoughts.
First, buy the best Rebel you can afford. Not the kit.
Buy the latest Tamron walking around lens, 18mmx270mm with (Vibration Control). This lens is all you will need for now.
Buy a storage card of at least 1G.
Buy a card reader.
Buy a battery charger. If you wish, I would if I were you, buy the battery power pack (Cannon Assessery) that will fit under your camera. If you get the battery pack buy extra bateries, I have 4, 2 in the pack and 2 ready to go.
Camera bag and a tri-pod.
I use Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 (there is also the Ultimate) for editing and ACDSee for quick and easy orgaizing and searching for files.
Subscribe to Pop Photography, ShutterBug and Outdoor Photography magazines and you are ready to go.
I hope this helps you.-Ron

PS: This is now your only camera! You will take it everywhere you go!
You will take pictures of everyone and everything you see!
You will take 100 shots in your back yard as soon as your up and running and then you will take a minimum of 100 shots a day for the rest of your life! For real!
Good Luck Adam

I have a very good experience with the Nikon D60 camera with which I began.
Practical examples can be found below (Gallery 2008):

Lens may be the beginning of the seed (price / performance), or better Nikon 16-85.
It is possible to get the comparable price as Canon 450D camera, but Nikon D60 is based on tests better.
