Full Version: Was My D100 A Good Idea ?

I bought a D100 a few monthes ago, it is a great camera that gives me a lot of opportunities, and I feel quite happy with it.

However, I see now that all the brand (including Canon, Nikon...) are making big moves and releasing new models... I wonder if I was right to buy this camera ! Should I have waited ?

It sounds like the new Nikon D70 will be a great value for money ? I'm really scared that it will totally beat my D100 on all aspects and turn my purchase into a "sorry you shouldnt have rushed" purchase...

On a wider point of view, it feels like the Digital Camera world is going too fast and that whenever you invest is too early : the next generation is already coming up !!!

Any comments ? Anything to say to make me feel better ?

That's the nature of digital photography at the moment - new updated models are released every year, even every 6 months. If you waited to buy the next best thing, you would probably never spend your money!

At the end of the day, if the D100 does everything that you want it to, then why worry about the D70? If I was you I'd carry on enjoying your current camera and only upgrade when something signifcantly better comes along - that's what I intend to do with my Canon 10D anyway.

I know what you mean Mark... But at the same time, given the price range of the gear we are talking about, I feel like being a fool : specially because the D70 will be much cheaper and probably as good as the D100 !!! (I'll be very selfish and hope not !)

You can always console yourself with the fact that by the time the D70 reaches the shops and is widely available, you will have got over 6 months use out of the D100 and taken loads of photos :-)

Buying digital cameras is a lot like buying computer equipment. My equipment is a little over two years old. It was fast stuff back then, but a 1.0 GHz processor is a turtle compared to the what is available now. Sould I have waited? Heck no,I got a good deal and it does what I need it to do. My advice is the same as Mark's. Enjoy your camera and let everyone else de-bug all the new stuff comming out. Your D100 is a proven product that should be good for many years. Put that baby to use and get your money's worth out of it!

"...it is a great camera that gives me a lot of opportunities, and I feel quite happy with it."

You said it yourself. Whatever the D70 may or may not do, you have a great camera that produces excellent results. Anything else is beside the point.

If you leter get to the point that the D100 doesn't have the ability to do what you need it to do (you need the D70's higher speed flash synch, you need the D2H's faster frame rate and huge buffer) then you'll need to decide whether to sell the D100 and get something else.

Until then, enjoy using the D100.

As everyone has said so far .. if you can achieve your objectives with the camera you bought that is great. Then you need to calculate what waiting for 6 months before you eventually would have been able to buy a D70 would have cost you in lost opportunities. Every month spent taking photographs is worth 10% of the purchase price of your camera's body (imho)..... thus the cost of waiting is VERY high. Get in, learn the features and functions of your camera backwards, establish a style .... and then worry about the the incremental improvements that a new technological stepping stone might offer you.

At the end of the day, your talent, inspiration and hard work count MUCH more toward the quality of your pictures than the model of camera you use.

Michael Reichmann of Luminous Landscape fame has recently posted an article which basically says the same thing:
