I can't advise you as you asked. I am just a novice to digital. But, I have suggestion. I can't get out much to take photos so I study all the recent posts. Return of Chris showed me how to learn the settings the photos were taken at (click "show EXIF Info" under the blue "additional info" line above). By studying the posts and the settings used to achieve them you may get some ideas. Also, by critiquing others' work, sometimes they will respond to your comment with a thought of their own. That's how I learned from Chris about the button I mentioned. One of the hardest things about photography is being largely alone in your efforts. There are many experts here on the blog who seem very willing to teach and advise. Can't go any where else for such an opportunity. Good luck.
It looks as though the front edge of the petals are in focus. I don't know the settings on the D40 but a smaller aperture (the picture is F/5.6) would help (to give you more depth of field), the only problem it is a tradeoff to shutter speed. I am sure there are more experienced people than me who could give you a better explanation (especially if they know the D40).
