One of my favourite Snow Goose pictures. I took it a few weeks ago near the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. My daughter and I happened across a large flock on a field and I managed to grab some good shots as the birds took off and landed with the mountains in the background. It was one of those days when so many things were just right....
As you will find out I like to view photos by what they teach me. This is an excellent composition. What makes it so? From my perspective the lower background contrasts in shade and tone with the upper background. The middle background that is precisely behind the bird is more a blend of the two in tone. Consequently, the eye senses a balance in the background. The bird is more or less placed on the line between the two dominant colors of the background. Consequently the subject is well placed in the overall composition. Also, the sharp action details of the bird provides a visually interesting subject. This is why it works so well as a composition, it seems to me. Well done.

One other thing I like about this image, in contrast to some of the others I've taken, is that, other than the dark colours on the bird, there actually isn't a lot of contrast. And despite the warm tones on some of the goose, the cool colours of the background still dominate. At least that's my amateurish opinion. :-)
