To me, a Yank, this flag always referred to the British. Aren't British and English the same?

Oh No!! The Union Flag, popularly known as the Union Jack, is the national flag of the United Kingdom. It is the British flag.

It is a combination of the three separate flags of the individual countries - England, Scotland and Nothern Ireland. England is only one part of Britain (just as the USA is only one part of "America")

How could we forget Wales - however the Welsh flag is not part of the Union Jack as Wales was already part of England and not a separate kingdom when the flag was first designed way back in 1606 - maybe however a Welsh Dragon should be incoporated into the Union flag ?
