Royal Gardens was laid out by Emperof Ferdinand I in the 1530's and then destroyed during the 30 years war by the Saxons and Swedes. It was later blown up by the Prussians, but saved from the French in 1741 by the payment of 30 pineapples. It was here that tulips were first imported into Europe and acclimatized before being taken to the Netherlands.
