This shot was taken on the evening of May 20, 2012 at approximately 6:45 pm PDT. The moon was moving off the sun as the eclipse was drawing to a close.
I made this capture with a p&s camera. As you know a point and shoot camera uses a contrast system for its auto focus system. A p&s can't capture an open sky. So, what I did was shoot the eclipse within a bunch of 'debris' such as the utility pole, wires, and trees. I used the 'debris' to frame the focal point. Thus I gave the auto focus system something to lock on. Which incidentally gave me the capture of the eclipse, too.
In my location we typically get a heavy cloud cover rolling in off the ocean at dusk. I thought the clouds would obliterate the eclipse. But, it was actually a blessing. The clouds safely shielded the brightness of the sun so the eclipse could be viewed with the naked eye. So, bad weather is a blessing after all. Hope you enjoy this capture. Cheers!
