About the hives: there are many standards, that is to say you need not discover the wheel .
There are already known some common rules, best proportions/dimentions/materials for building the hive, arised from human experience in beekeeping over centuries, but there is also some place for your personal invention.
The most popular hives in Poland are named "wielkopolski" (great-Polish) and "warszawski" (Warsaw - name derived from the capital of Poland).
We (me & my wife) decided to renovate some of already owned (as a gift) older ones, and also ask a wood butcher to do against order 3-4 completely new hives, of "wielkopolski" type. We treat beekeping as a PURE hobby, so our main goal is to deliver best conditions for our bees. The costs are much less important.
