Charles William Vane Stewart. 5th Marquiss of Londonderry. Coal Baron during the Victorian age, owner of the Vane Tempest colliery located at Seaham, County Durham. The statue is located in Durham City market place & sits atop a 20ft+ plinth. An interesting, but sad anecdote, is that the sculptor reputedly took his own life when it was pointed out to him the he had neglected to sculpt a tongue in the horses mouth, indeed there is no tongue!
A fine perspective capture. Very much like the fine details that can be seen on the all one color statue. Excellent light and contrast management. Such an unfortunate end for such a fine artist as its creator. Thank you for the narrative. Would never have known this if it hadn't been for you and your photography. Thank you
Thank you Bob. Many of the 'gentry' of this green & pleasant land made their money & indeed their titles off the backs of the poor & indecently worked untrodden 'common' peoples. I say this not as a criticism but just as a fact.
A photograph, like life, is only a moment in time.
