Great Blue Heron preening

Here's a picture I took of a Great Blue Heron preening last weekend. It was late in the day and setting sun is responsible for the somewhat yellowish cast to the photo. The bird was very well lit which was I shot at 1/2500 a sec at 300 mm, but the result was that the background looks a bit darker than it was. Still learning about these things....

THEY ARE GREAT BIRDS TO SHOOT . NOW TRY TO GET THEM WHEN THEY ARE LOOKING FOR FISH ? IF YOU DO SEE ONE YOU MAY HAVE TO WAIT QUITE A LONG TIME TO GET YOUR SHOT . I HAVE WATIED AS LONG AS ONE HOUR TO GET A SHOT ? GOOD LUCK

Superb color and details. Love the close up profile. Actually, I like the darker background because it makes the bird standout against the contrasting background. Seems to me you should put this experience in your tool box so you can retrieve it again. Cheers.

Thanks everyone... Glad the lighting seems to have worked that day. And as for patience waiting for the heron to catch a fish, well that's definitely easier without two kids with me. But I do want to try....
