Great shot, although I do agree about the background it does definitely elevate a shot into the next level. Check out Rob Amy's work on fredmiranda.com if you haven't already. Some of his backgrounds are almost artwork on their own (does help having a bloody good camera too!!)
Like this but notice something else, which is what appears to be some burnout of whites at the top of the beak. Generally a very nice shot though, and nice pose with his head stretched upward.
