I really love this photo. The best I've seen so far on this website, especially in terms of macro photography. Well done for a first try.
I think you can improve it 100% though with almost no effort. If you just crop the bottom off by about half an inch (which will probably mean you'll need to cut some off the top as well). This will remove the black patch which leads the eye away from the amazingly pin sharp stamen.
Thanks for the tip, Nick. I have done some subtle retouching in Photoshop: using the clone tool and healing tool to get rid of the dark bit. I was careful to only go over the dark section and not to over do it...
Very jelous, I have tried a similar sort of shot, but this is much much better.
I love the red, was the colour enhanced in PS or is this the actual colour of the flower?
