Yup! Def works better for me in b&w. I think its about right, the smoother tones remind me more of Ilford XP-2 film, which I loved. You could try a more contrasty shot, but this is a nice natural shot and looks more realistic. It's very moody and does all the better for it. The right side horizon rising also helps as a dead level one gets boring. Nice one, I think you could do some seriously hot stuff in b&w keep experimenting! Stonehenge has been photographed to death, but this is more than able to hold its own.
I like this as a BW it definately adds mood. IMO if your going to go BW you should do so behind the camera and capture the tones and contrast that way
instead of converting. It seems so hard to jump to BW when I'm at a place I love to photograph I always want to go color. I just think the camera will do better than the PS conversion. I like your image both ways.
Bailbr you have a valid opinion there, I have had the opinion that the camera should do the bw work, as I feel the depths of blacks and greys should be deeper, I am certainly not overly happy at converting the original. I will have to have a go I think at both options. The only good thing with regard converting the original is at least there is a colour one to go back to

A tough one to call with the b&w thing. I have shot and converted a lot of pics, but I also shot some in b&w! Hard to know which way to go as i could see little difference in quality. I would suggest using the contrast adjustment, clarify (most handy), brightness to tweak it until happy. I like shooting in b&w although you have to think more about tone & composition, maybe a good thing. But then sometimes I wish I has taken colour so as not to miss out! Try a few sample shot using both col+b&w and playing with the vivid/natural option!
Definitely is a tough call, I do have some pics that I soley shot in bw so will check them out later. Must admit when I shoot in bw, 9 times out of 10 it looks superb on the camera Lcd and Sh*te at home on the pc. Still it's all good fun and at least unlike film, no money is wasted practicing. Will also check out the vivid/nat options, looks like some severe reading ahead

Very nice but I think it would benefit from more contrast too. As far as shoot b/w or colour debate, if you are using a digital camera then it is simply using internal processing to convert. But there is no better processing tool than photoshop. Have you tried adjusting the levels and curves? If you dont have photoshop you can download a free processing tool called GIMPshop (just search on the net for it ). Its very good.
Many thanks Donmac appreciated, have just touched up the photo by adjusting the contrast slightly, didn't touch the brightness. Hopefully this is nearer the finished article. If not and anybody else has advice, I will be grateful.

A great minimalist shot of the stones, almost a portrait. As regards B/W, you can always make a better conversion than the camera manually in PS, mainly because having the separate RGB information gives you more options for tonal balance. Search the net for some suggested techniques. That said, this shot is fine.
