Eastern Watersnake

Eastern Watersnake

First warm day of spring and all the snakes were out. This eastern watersnake appeared to have eaten not too long before i found it in the swamp.

I like how the background colours compliment the colours of the snake's body. My first instinct was to crop the trees out. However, I realized how cleverly you set this up to demonstrate his watery environment without the background overpowering the subject. That separates the picture taker from the artist. Bravo! The focus is as sharp as the rows of tiny teeth. Nice job.

thanks for the thoughtful comment. I prefer environmental shots when i can get them and as you rightly pointed out, the background is the most difficult thing. This is especially so in a swamp and if you see my green frog shot also taken not far from this spot, i try to find backgrounds to compliment the subject. I have to say i usually fail so i have a lot of discarded shots from this location. I got lucky with this because the snake was on a raised log so i could use the shooting angle to give me a better background than usual.
