I'd put the shelled peanut in my hand, and extend on the window sill... he/she'd come and take it right from my palm if I were patient... I miss that.. don't see them as much where I am now... Really nice bird to photograph. Colour is great. I would switch out of auto mode and use Tv or Av and add flash. Fill flash will bring out the colour even more and help bring up the beak and put a catchlight in the eye though you actually have one here from the natural light. Nice work.

These are such beautiful birds and I wish they were here. Perhaps because it was raining it lacks detail and sharpness, but I don't think that explains the blurriness. The background distractions don't help either. I'm sorry, but there's no way this merits a 9/10, which isn't a criticism of what you're trying to achieve. I have to agree with desertpea on this. This is a nice shot because for most of us it is an unusual bird that we wouldnt see in the wild. Photographically however, there are a few minor flaws (IMO) which would lead me to give it a 7 (it is I feel slightly out of focus and a tad oversharpened - one of my own weaknesses!)I have tried taking bird pictures and know how difficult it is, so I still feel this is a very good effort and I look forward to seeing more. It does not I feel merit a 10 and this is where my hackles have been raised here recently. As dp said above - "...There's a lot of ego stroking here at the moment and not enough constructive criticism..." All too often recently I have seen 10's flying around left right and centre. Certain people just have to put a photo up and it gets a 10! I know its subjective and what I would consider a 10 others may not, but I have seldom given a 10 as I feel these images are something really special that we dont see everyday and that really should deserve it. I feel it also puts others under pressure to give it a higher mark. If a photo has three 10's beside it but you only felt it merited a 7 or 8 - it is more likely that you would either give it a 9 (so as not to seem so disagreeable) or not bother commenting at all. I guess its still the old chestnut of whether we should get rid of or restructure the rating procedure. I personally feel that a 10 scale is too much and should be reduced to at most a 5 with perhaps even a 4 or 3 scale system. I know its nice to get high scores but at the same time we have to be realistic and realise that its all pretty pointless if you can get a 10 for puting up something that is definitely not worthy of a 10. Recently I have been saying to myself 'whats the point in submitting photos anymore?' Yes I want a good score - but at the same time I want to earn it - I want to be a better photographer. I think you are aiming this at an innocent subject on the matter. I understand the points you are bringing forward but they have gone beyond the photo critique and should actually be placed in the forum. From what I have known of Amandart here, she will be the first to show humility around here, but crapping her out because of what others have placed as a rating is really a vent that belongs in the discussion forums. I have seen what you are saying elsewhere... even see certain ones low-balling some while high-balling others in his/her circle for photos of often lesser quality... I agree Oly_M that this was not the place to have my rant and will use the forum the next time.
