thanks Nigel,


on two neighbouring islands in the channel islands, namely Jersey and Guernsey, there where two major artilliary batteries which faced each other, covering the channel between the islands. on both islands there were a serious of these range finder towers which triangulated the fire on any enemy shipping that might be seen in the channel
