There is indeed an emphasis on the leaf (I did find the project "landing on planet leaf interesting"). It's also a kind of third rule respect.
About the fly, I can't see how I can get a better result with such a back lighting (you can even see trough it).
Saw this shot earlier and really drew my attention. Nice contrast, colors. I do agree that if there were some way to bring out the insect more, it would add to the photo. Very nice shot.
