I used the lens as 180mm, no macro,settings where F5 @ 1/800.

these are the specs of my camera..does it mean I can do that too?

nig, anything from F4-F7 should be ok but stand further back and use the longer end of your zoom 150mm and up this will also compress your shot and help give you a shallow D.O.F.

This might have been quite a nice shot, but the lens flare in the background is a bit too distracting...liquid on something back there?

I think the word you are looking for is highlights, and it is on a bowl of dates.
Lens flare is when the sun is shining into your lens.
