Thanks everyone for your kind comments,Amanda a maroon was a kinda huge flare that was fired into the sky to attract the attention of the lifeboat crew to let them know that someone was in peril on the sea ,and the lifeboat crews being all volunteers would stop what they were doing and rush to the lifeboat house and launch the lifeboat crewed by themselves down this slipway and others like it ,so me lying on the slipway could be quite hazardous (I think these days they have done away with maroons in favour of pagers) Harvey
