Upon a rocky re-entry to shore in my little boat, I noticed a Great Blue Heron sitting at the opposite shore in a beam of sunlight on a backwoods river this week.

Top marks for exposure here. I know this wasnt an easy shot. I am amazed at lack of noise at iso400. On my camera (eos300) the noise is very evident at 400+. Have you used any software to reduce the noise.

donmac: No noise reduction here at all, but I understand that Noise Ninja is a fabulous and affordable program for such a problem. The 20D is almost noise-free at 400; if there's a 40D, I'm expecting (hope hope hope) the same at ISO 800!
redrum: I seem to always go very tight and follow ruleofthirds explicitely. These days I'm warming up to the idea of leaving more environment in the picture of an animal and maybe even breaking some composition "rules." It's difficult for me to do so but I'm trying. I find I'm more worried about if anyone can see the rocks in the background than how it was composed. :-(
If you can't see the rocks then this is a graphic more than a photograph. gb
