not a great photo i know - but i am not use to seeing snakes! especially not in my pond! plus i wasnt expecting him to come out of the water and look down the camera. Scarey! the light was very bad hence the DOF
Rachel, i am a snake fanatic and i know what it is like to get inspected by one. This is a great capture and you should be proud to have one in your pond, it means you have a little eco system that is working in your garden. I am green with envy.

Agree with Dilwyn's comment Rachel..... it is a great shot....very different and engaging......your new found friend has a "questioning" look, even down to the tilt of the head....good on you for having a pond for wildlife too...Alan
Superb shot, the campo round here is teeming with snakes, but they're all very timid and you're lucky to get within 12ft of one. To capture one (in the wild) in a pose like that is wonderful.
