This was a wild snake, they are protected from injury, trade and killing, but if you handle them correctly they calm down quickly, which alows you to get some close up's. I have cropped this, but was very close to start with.
One thing to watch out for is when a grass snake feels threatened, it will squirt a very, VERY nasty smelling secretion from its anal gland and if you get it on your skin, the smell will make you feel like vomiting. It does not wash off easily either.
