Really interesting, Tim. Was this with your XT? I just got a cell phone, and I took a few pics at the Seattle airport today whilst picking up somebody. I'll be posting some in the next few days. My cell camera is really crappy, so I've been converting them in CS3, and I'm very pleased with the results. I've often wanted to take my camera to the airport, but was afraid of having to be in the security office having some sort of cavity search done because I had this big camera everywhere. Felt more at ease with the cell phone.

This was indeed taken with the XT. Had the white L-series lens on it and not many people seemed to notice. But that was probably just because of the holiday rush.
I've never had any major problems with taking pictures inside airports or public transportation places. Was only questioned once for it and that was in Amsterdam's Schiphol airport a couple of years ago.
I feel comfortable enough in airports, so expect to see some from the inside of Berlin's Tegel airport in a couple of weeks. Get to spend some time overseas before heading back up to school
