or transom and bow. The guy behind is always trying to steal the front guys wind..but there are rules about who has right of way during any overtaking manouevre. Still feel these are a bit soft ..guess I need to practice a bit more with this lens.

Rob these are just local Club racing so no, they are not televised anywhere. There are professional series like the Utra 40s which are usually on Sky and the Olympic sailing is covered. There is a lot of sport and excitement to be had at amateur level - think that is true of most sports. Viv
Oh ok. We don't have anything like that in my neck of the woods that I know of. (not a big enough body of water or not enough wind... seems like both would put a damper on it for us) Looks like a lot of fun though.

Thank you Maggi - missed you there. Despite what the camera time (it is still on GMT) this was about 7.30 pm (we race evenings in summer here as it stays light so late) and it was very hazy so not good lighting at all. Rob most stretches of water have dinghy sailing and racing on them and they can be all the more fun for not being very big. For televised yacht racing look at Steve's image of the Transat yachts. This will definitely be part televised from onboard cameras. Viv
Thats a very good shot Viv, plenty of detail I find the Longer Lens,work better at the wider end of the scale, I use 5/6 Quite a Lot with good results, best of Luck

Hi Viv, another action filled and colourful shot.....it looks ok to me!....with the IS, there are two "modes", 1 is for stationery targets and 2 is for moving targets, so it should be on 2. Sometimes, especially in poor light, the AF may take take a second to lock on to sharp focus, so it is best to depress half way, and hold for that second, then fully depress......you will see when it has gone "sharp".....also, for this sort of shot, have the focus distance set to 6.8m, as it cuts down on the focus time dramatically......Alan
Thanks Alan. That is exactly as it was set - it is exactly the same as the 70-300 IS USM lens in it's settings. But I still feel these are not quite as crisp as that lens - maybe due to the slight haze yesterday evening. Viv
I have had my millimeter ruler out and can report that the horizon is level!
