I went to a lot of them when in Japan.they are related to the rice harvest, also a Japanese word for a festival . Sometime sponsored by local shrine or temple. Also this is a great photo.
Yup, pretty much translates as festival. There is a main big one during the Summer months.

Yes been there and don that. Another good festival is cherry blossom time. Went one year and boy did we get drunk. They were giving us so much to drink we didn't spend one dime all weekend.
