Interesting--this is 723 px in height--another vertical one in the POTW competition is 706 px in height... A bit confusing about what is the *right* size for a posted photo. I'll certainly keep the "too small" critique in mind if I post again and will make them really big (although there seems to be a limit to what you can see without scrolling?)!
Keep coming back to this because it's just so-o-o gorgeous! Ignore my comment about distracting backgrounds - don't know what got into me! Could be an age thing ...

PS With verticals, you can see it all if you set the height at 600 pixels. 800 pixels for landscapes.

Actually I am confused about this. About 30 minutes after originally posting this I realized I had uploaded a small version that was processed for my blog. So I did an edit and I thought I switched it to a larger version. But when I checked it on a second computer (which does not have the original so it could not be a cached copy), the name is the same as the small one, though the photo appears larger in the post. I'm confused! Maybe you can't switch photos after posting if you want to make an edit, but rather need to delete and start over (which I am not going to do at this point)? Does it still look small? Anyway, thanks for liking it, Jan and other commenters!
For some reason the file name remains the same. I've been confused by the same thing, it lets you switch pictures, but it keeps the same file name. Test it out using some other photos and you'll get the picture. (pun intended). My Gallery
Looks perfect to me. I don't find the background at all distracting, rather, find it very interesting and different from the usual post-fixed blur. Having shot a number of these myself, can see you caught an unusual and rare moment for this bird that many of us obviously would love to have had. Upload max 800 px one side or the other. You got my vote. Beautiful composition and light, by the way.
