The tiny wood chips are flying as this Female Downy Woodpecker (Hairy?) industriously hammers her way into this Yucca stalk foraging for insect larva. A nice suprise in my yard this morning. She took turns with her companion.
The Downy Woodpecker is one of the most common woodpeckers found in eastern backyards and is 7" long. The Hairy woodpecker is 9" long. They are otherwise virtually the same.
