Panasonic has received two awards from the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA). The Lumix GH4 compact system camera (pictured) has been awarded ‘Best Hybrid Photo/Video Camera’ and the Panasonic TZ60 (also known as the ZS40) ranked first as 2014's ‘Best Superzoom Camera.’

Canon has been awarded four honours by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA). The EOS 70D was named Best Advanced DSLR, the title 'Best Expert Compact Camera' went to the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II, the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x (pictured) was dubbed 2014's Best Pro DSLR Lens, while Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology won the Best Imaging Innovation category.
Nikon has issued a firmware update for its Coolpix AW110 all-weather compact camera. According to the company, version 1.1 incorporates the following bug fixes:
- An issue that resulted in deviation in the timing of movie video and sound has been resolved.
- An issue that caused latitude and longitude information displayed with Data imprint to be incorrect has been resolved.
- An issue that, in some rare cases, caused the camera to freeze while shooting with acquisition of GPS position information has been resolved.

Fuji has posted a firmware update for the Fujifilm X100S and Fujifilm X100S Black cameras. Version 1.20 adds support for the TCL-X100 teleconverter. In practice, this means that the 'Wide Conversion Lens' menu item - whose selectable settings were On and Off - has been changed to 'Conversion Lens,' and now offers Wide, Tele and Off settings. When "Tele" is selected, the size of the bright frame in the optical viewfinder will switch to showing the shooting area for the tele conversion lens.

The LYTRO ILLUM is a new light field camera for professionals. The LYTRO ILLUM camera features a 40-megaray light field sensor, 8x optical zoom lens (30mm-250mm equivalent) with a constant aperture of f/2, 1/4000 of a second high-speed shutter, extreme close-focus macro capability, articulating touchscreen and a flash hotshoe. The LYTRO ILLUM camera will ship starting July 2014 for a retail price of $1,599.

Nikon has announced a new Android-powered compact camera called the Nikon Coolpix S810c. Equipped with 12x optical zoom, a 16-megapixel sensor and WiFi, the Nikon Coolpix S810c features a newly adopted comment function which enabless users to add comments, such as their impression of the scene, immediately after the shutter is released. Successor to the Coolpix 800c, the Nikon Coolpix 810c adds a 3.7" display with a resolution of 1.2 million dots. Other feature highlights include Vibration Reduction, geotagging, Google Play support and Full HD video recording capabilities. The camera will be available in May for £249.99 / € 299.00 / $349.95.

Samsung UK has today announced a major trade-up promotion across selected models of its Smart camera and NX lens range. Running until 31 at participating retailers both in-store and online, the promotion enables anyone that purchases a new Samsung camera or lens included within the offer and trades in their old digital camera (in working condition) to claim up to £200/€240. To claim the reward, all people need to do is buy a qualifying Samsung camera or lens from an eligible retailer, either in-store or online, and fill out an online claim form on Samsung.com within 14 days of making the purchase. They will then receive a pre-paid postage label within two days via email. Customers in the Republic of Ireland will be emailed the freepost address to send back their camera. Once this has arrived, they must simply pack and return their old digital camera within 30 days of purchase. Qualifying claims will then be fulfilled via direct bank transfer.

The Olympus Stylus SH-1 is a 16-megapixel compact camera with a 25-600mm (eq.) f/3-6.9 lens and 5-axis optical image stabilisation. Other key features include a PEN-like design with aluminium alloy body, 1080p movies, high-speed video recording for slow-motion playback, a time-lapse movie mode, a 460kdot/3in touchscreen, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Additionally, the TG-3 has the first-ever macro mode to feature four settings in one. Microscope Mode lets you magnify a subject more than 40x from as close as 1cm. So if it measures just 1mm in reality it can impressively appear as large as 44.4mm on the LCD. Focus Stacking Mode automatically shoots multiple shots of a macro subject with different parts in focus and then merges them to a crisply focused image of publishable quality. The Olympus Stylus 1 has won a Red Dot Design Award. "The elegance of this camera’s design is truly distinctive, and fully merits its red dot award", the judges said. "It is sufficiently compact to be a go-anywhere camera, but offers performance comparable to that of a professional camera."

Combined production of Canon's compact digital and interchangeable-lens digital cameras surpassed 250 million units on 31 January 2014, the company said in a statement. Canon began producing and marketing digital cameras in the mid 1990s. The first digital SLR cameras bearing the Canon logo - such as the Canon EOS DCS 3 (pictured) - were jointly developed by Canon and Kodak; with the first "true" Canon EOS dSLR - the Canon EOS D30 - being released in 2000. The first Canon digital compact camera, the Canon Powershot 600, had been introduced four years earlier.

The first of these special centennial editions is the Leica S 'Edition 100' (pictured), a kit that comprises a Leica S medium-format system camera and two of the most popular S lenses, each featuring a leaf shutter - the Leica Summarit-S 70 mm f/2.5 ASPH CS and the Leica Elmarit-S 30 mm f/2.8 ASPH CS. The second special edition is the Leica D-Lux 6 ‘Edition 100'. This centennial edition set includes a Leica D-Lux 6 compact camera in a two-colour finish with a silver lens and a high-gloss black camera body, featuring the centennial logo on the front plate.

Fuji has issued a firmware update for the Fujifilm XQ1 digital compact camera. Version 1.10 adds a “Suppressed Flash mode (where the flash does not fire even when the subject is poorly lit)" option to the flash menu. In particular this is useful if you use the XQ1 with the waterproof housing WP-XQ1 when diving as it makes it possible to select “Suppressed Flash” mode even when the flash is raised. Canon U.S.A. is recalling about 14,000 PowerShot SX50 HS cameras because, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, "a chemical used in the rubber part of the viewfinders on the camera can cause skin or eye irritation or an allergic reaction to the user." Canon says the phenomenon only affects "certain lots from September 1 through November 15, 2013." The affected cameras have serial numbers beginning with “69”, “70” or “71” and have “1” as the sixth digit of the serial number. If you own one of the affected cameras you ought to contact Canon USA's Customer Support Centre.

Unveiled in the run-up to this year's Consumer Electronics Show, the Galaxy Camera 2's upgrades include a faster 1.6GHz Quad Core processor, 2.0 GB of RAM, enhanced battery life, Android 4.3 and NFC connectivity. The Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 (£399.99) is now available from Dixons, with selected online and high street retailers including John Lewis to follow in two weeks time.
