With an equivalent focal length of 29-320mm, the lens offers an 11x zoom range – making it a powerful, lightweight alternative to carrying multiple lenses.
The EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is designed exclusively for use with EOS cameras featuring an EF-S lens mount – including the new EOS 50D, EOS 1000D, EOS 450D, and earlier models.
High quality optics
The EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS features a 16 element, 12 group construction. This includes UD and aspherical lens elements, which minimise chromatic aberration and ensure crisp, corner-to-corner detail across the zoom range. A close focusing distance of just 45cm offers photographers total framing flexibility.
4-stop Image Stabilizer
A Canon 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer – specially designed for the lens’ specific focal length range - works to counteract image blur that can occur when shooting handheld, or at slow shutter speeds. Automatic panning detection ensures effective performance when tracking moving subjects. Plus, because the IS system is based in the lens, results are visible through the viewfinder during framing.
No flare or ghosting
Reflection off a digital camera’s image sensor can cause flare and ghosting. To suppress this, the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS uses optics treated with Canon’s patented Super Spectra coatings – for crisp, undistorted images with natural colour balance.

This looks like a very interesting lens. But I wonder why Canon has not included an USM in the lens?
That's standard for almost all Canon lenses, so it's not obvious why they would leave it out in a new lens.

Yeah!! thats strange.. I believe it has to do solely with the price of the lens..USM would add on to the cost.
Nevertheless, I would not hesitate to pick one up if it behaves as good as the nikkor 18-200 VR. Thats a magnificent walkaround lens. does not offer the optical quality of the primes but, makes it up with the flexibility ...
Lets wait and see till the initial hands on reviews pop up.

You might consider the Tamron 18-270 lens. I have the new canon 18-200 and barrel distortion on wide is bad and it creeps when between 50-80mm range when tilt downward and upward.

I have this lens too. IQ is good and very sharp at wide and tele end. The distortion will be easily corrected bu canon's DPP 3.5 software. Gravity zooming could be prevented at 18mm and taking pictures downward or upward just hold zoom ring to prevent it from creeping. Other manufacturer has the same issues with their superzoom lens, same as the much awaited tamron's 18-270mm lens. This is designed for walkaround or travel, so there should be compromise with it Image quality. But I've it's IQ good throughout it's range.
