Canon Powershot A710 IS Review

Canon Powershot A710 ISThe Canon Powershot A710 IS is the new top-of-the-range model in Canon’s popular A-Series digital cameras. The Canon A710 IS is the first A-Series camera to feature optical image stabilisation, which is a good thing as it also has a 6x zoom lens equivalent to 35-210mm. Add a 7 megapixel sensor, full range of creative shooting modes including Manual, a 2.5 inch LCD screen and optical viewfinder, and the Canon Powershot A710 IS looks like a serious contender, especially given the street price of just over £200 / $300. But do all of these features translate into a great camera? Read the latest PhotographyBLOG review to discover if the Canon Powershot A710 IS is the right camera for you.

  1. Sometimes you make better pictures with your mobile instead of a regulair camera...

  2. how does the image quality compares with the SD700 and the SD800?

  3. Durian, you can read our review of the SD700 here:

  4. Your comment in the Ease of use section:
"Sadly the Color Accent and Color Swap options seen on other Canon cameras haven't been included on the Powershot A710 IS."
contradicts the specification details given in your review and given on the Canon website. Both of these pages state that the 710 IS has these features.

  5. Hi Annette.

This could just be an oversight on my part, but those options definitely weren't in the My Colors menu (where they have been on previous Canon cameras).

I'll ask Canon to confirm and get back to you.

  6. the colour swap feature of my colour is in the scene mode selection. If you look at the camera specifications.

daniel at 10:18am on Thursday, November 09, 2006

  7. We've now confirmed that the Color Accent and Color Swap options have moved to the Scene Mode sections and updated our review accordingly.

  8. Is it true that the camera flash akes almost 5 seconds to recharge and that focus is slow in low-light conditions?

chris at 08:05pm on Saturday, December 16, 2006

  9. Hi

I'm going snowboarding in Austria, and wondering how this camera will handle the cold? I had a Sony Cybershot P72 last time, and after 5 minutes it completely froze up from the cold (froze as in hanging, not actual ice-freezing), and wouldn't even swith on. Back inside in warmer conditions it would work again.

    Thanks,

    Tass

  10. Tass, I will check this with Canon for you.

  14. Can anyone guide me in choosing between NIKON COOLPIX L5 and CANON A710 IS?

    Which is a better choice?

Anil Agnihotri at 06:33am on Friday, May 04, 2007

  15. Hi Anil,

I've reviewed both cameras and would choose the Canon A710.

Mark Goldstein at 11:10am on Saturday, May 05, 2007

  16. Thanks a lot Mark...

  17. hi. I have to replace a stolen Canon A85. I have been told that the A710 is a good replacement as A85 now extinct. Would you say this was a good choice fro a techno-phobe with no need of fancy features - I just need a point & shoot. Thanks.

tina at 01:02pm on Monday, May 21, 2007

  18. Hello,

I am hoping to replace a DSC Sony which was stolen and I have always admired my friend's Canon Powershot 540. I am between the Canon 710 and the Canon 630. I mean, the 630 has 8 megapixels but no image stabilization and the 710 has stabilization but only 7.1 megapixels. Which would you recommend?

Erika at 10:49pm on Friday, July 13, 2007

  19. I have a new Canon A710 IS. Has anyone else noticed light beams on the left side of the LCD. It does not effect the quality of the photo but it is annoying when looking at a shot through the LCD(expecially in low light)while taking the shot & reviewing. Any comments welcome.
