Epson P-4000 Multimedia Storage Viewer Review

The Epson P-4000 Multimedia Storage Viewer allows you to download digital photos and movies onto its 80Gb hard-drive and then view them on its 3.8 inch colour LCD screen. The Epson P-4000 has built-in card slots for Compact Flash and SD memory cards. The Epson P4000 will be of particular interest to digital SLR camera users as it can show a preview of some RAW file formats as well as JPEGs. You can connect the P-4000 directly to a PC or TV and it will even print directly onto compatible Epson printers. In addition the Epson P4000 can play digital music in the form of MP3 and AAC files. So can the Epson P-4000 do all of the things that it claims and do them well?

1. Vosonic 8360 is better value for money. It is faster in operation and has user upgradable HDD. Battery is easily removable NP 100 for mobility. QVGA screen is more than adequate for viewing.

2. From a few minutes use, the supplied Photo-4 PC software is terrible and barely out of Alpha test - it is very easy to crash (V1.94).
   
   Integration with the PC is poor and the PV4000 file system is incompatible with Windows. The PV4000 appears correctly as a new drive and you can see the PV4000 file system from the PC but the naming is diferent and there must be some features in the PV4000 that are not represented in WIndows because the album called "samples" seen on the PV4000 is seen as a folder called ALBM001 from the PC.
   
   All PC transfers have to be done through the pre defined folder PC-DATA and then photos moved manually from the menu of the PV4000. If you try to do this differently, the PC will use the disk drive on the PV4000 OK and appears to work - for example you can create a new folder (album?) from the PC (say "family"), put photos in there and you can see them from the PC, but you won't find it on the PV4000.
   
   Following on from the above Ideas, I created ALBM002 from the PC and put photos in there. You still can't see it from the PV4000 but the next time you create an album on the PV4000 it crashes because the file system already has a name ALBM002! (It does recover it's own file system and it then shows you the photos you already had put in there from the PC!! so it is very close to being usable!)
   
   Drag and Drop into Photo 4 is not fully supported.
   
   Clearly this product is designed for people who use digital cameras and memory cards, not for people you already store most of their stuff on the PC
   
   27-08-2006 - PV firmware 4.04 - there is an upgrade but I have not risked it yet
