Fujifilm Finepix E550 Review

Fujifilm Finepix E550The Fujifilm Finepix E550 is a 6 megapixel digital camera that retains the same design as the cheaper Finepix E510 and E500, but crucially improves on those models in a number of key areas. Most obviously the Fuji E550 has 6 megapixels rather than the 5 and 4 of the E510 and E500. Perhaps more importantly than the extra megapixel is the kind of sensor that the FinePix E550 uses, namely Fuji’s Super CCD HR, which allows the camera to offer an interpolated resolution of 12.3 megapixels, plus a RAW file format. The Fujifilm Finepix E550 is also larger than many digicams, which Fujifilm claims makes it more of a photographer’s camera. So does the Finepix E550 appeal to the photographer in me? Read my review to find out.

  1. What about the zoom error and problems with the zoom freezing up?

SA at 11:34pm on Tuesday, March 08, 2005

  2. I didn't experience any problems like the ones that you describe during the review.

Mark at 08:15am on Wednesday, March 09, 2005

  3. ZOOM ERROR, of course right when I needed my camera. No it doesn't work and I would like to know if I get it repaired will it be a trend. Has anyone had the problem more times after reapir?

  4. My E550 has locked up twice now (Zoom Error). It's currently on it's way back to Fuji's repair center for the second time. I just read that removing the batteries from the camera for a few hours fixes the problem. I don't know if that's really a fix or not, but it certainly is an easy and economical possibility to try. Unfortunately, I didn't see that advice until after my camera was in transit to the repair center.

  5. I didn't experience any problems like this during my review, but then I did only have the camera for a couple of weeks.

  6. Zoom error is easily fixed. Gently pull lens barrel out to full extension. You will hear a click. Then turn camera off and on again. Done.

In my case a transparent waterproof bag didn't allow full extension. I found the solution through

    http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-7593-0.html?forumID=58&threadID=11947&messageID=688826

It works for e550 and probably most fuji's.

  7. I was looking for people who have experienced the same problem with the fuji a310 and the "ZOOM ERROR." Many people have had this problem and I've read it has something to do with the internal software. I'm lookig for the newest drivers to solve the problem. I hope my camera will be living again soon. downer

  8. I did a Google +FinePix +"Zoom Error" and got here as well as lots of other places.

I have not found any official-looking Fuji
ackowledgements of the zoom error problem, but I have found enough reports of returns and complaints to believe Fuji should know about this problem.

I have returned the FinePix E550 and was hoping to just pick up another one. But any company's failure to respond to real field problems with official acknowledgement really pisses me off.

Fuji has made my blacklist and will have to percolate back to the bottom before I'll try another product of theirs.

As a reviewer, I hope you'll relay this to them. When they get customer complaints they should troll the web and estimate that each customer report on the web represents a small percentage of the non-techies who are also having trouble. They will lose people over this if they don't do something proactive support-wise.

Saying "send it back to the shop" in the manual was really lame in the first place...

  9. Thanks for your reaction.
I did contact fuji and they let me know that they could fix the zoom error for the price of : 145 euro!!!! (only the camera was 300 euro)
I was shocked!!!!!!! But acording to fuji, the camera was well worth the 145 euro.
I'm not paying this money to get it fixed(send it back tot the shop.... ya right!). I invested the money (145) in a new digital-camera: not a fuji!!!!!! You can understand that fuji made my blacklist to.

  11. I am having a problem with the Fuji F700 gone completely haywire. My camera is about 2 years old. When you turn it on it just keeps cycling through some computer thing with lines and colors - just spinning - my local camera shop says $250 or so to fix it. We only paid just over $300 for the camera. Anyone else had this problem?

Jill at 02:16am on Saturday, July 23, 2005

  12. Seems like Fuji's got a good thing there with lots of cameras going broken and needed to be fixed for lots and lots of money........

    Not buying a Fuji again......

  13. I just got a used E550 off of eBay. The camera seemed to be working perfectly, then I began to notice some problems. The camera would say "Low Battery" 5 minutes after putting brand new ones in! Then, it started randomly turning itself off after taking 3-4 photos. Does anyone else experience this problem? Is it a factory defect/is it repairable?

Alisha at 02:56am on Sunday, August 21, 2005

  14. I have this same problem with my Fujifilm A310. It happened after I had cleaned the lens - I switched the camera off by opening the battery hatch whilst doing so. Ever since then, I get a zoom error message.

I tried the solution above of oulling out the lens, but it doesn't work for me. I also tried leaving the batteries out for ages and also switching on and off, none of these work. I don't think I'll be buying Fuji again.

Matthew at 11:50am on Sunday, August 21, 2005

  15. Tried the solution on the link posted by Bobomo and it worked. The last time this happened I sent the camera back to Fuji to be repaired and it took about five weeks. When I called this time I was told by a customer service rep that they would send a mail code so I wouldn't have to pay for shipping and after they received my camera I would be sent a new one. If this fixes the problem I'll be happy.

  17. I've had my A310 for a little over a year now and when I turned it on today all I could see on the screen was purple and black horizontal lines. When I try taking a picture, this is how the picture turns out. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it?

Rachel at 05:48pm on Friday, September 02, 2005

  18. Ive a finepix s7000. SUPRISE...its got a zoom error! Does that mean fuji have this problem in all cameras? Ive done nothing to it & was v. happy. Im trying the take out battery put in battery, and hope it works. Very pissed.

  19. Just found this site and thought I'd give it a try.

I've had my E550 for 3 months and although I was really loving it as I travelled with it for 2 months, it decided to go wonky in the last 2 weeks of the trip.

I'd been using it as I drove around Ireland, keeping it nearby and turning it on to snap pics as I went. One time it seemed to have not turned off (lens was out), but it wouldn't respond to anything I did--on/off button, batteries out/in, new batteries in, change xD cards, etc.--the lens continued to stay out. It eventually turned off and the lens went back in, but then...

Basically, now the screen won't work for playback mode--it's completely blank no matter what I do (same tricks: new batteries, leave batteries out, new xD card, switch record/play back and forth, turn on/off, etc., plus checking the screen properties/settings). To make it more mysterious, it displays the live scene just fine when I'm framing a shot, and even shows the shot for 2 sec after I take one--it just goes blank when I turn it on to playback mode to see all the shots on the card. The pics are fine, though--I've transferred them to my computer and they're great.

Any ideas? I just got back from my trip and will leave on another in 10 days, so not really enough time to send it in to the shop atm (i'll be back in a month, though).

  20. Reading all the posts regarding the E550 problems, there are problems with the mechanical movement of the lens, dust in the CCD that affects the picture, and the banding problem. All these problems have been reported by several people and all of them also have indicated the inability of Fuji service to deal with the problem in a timely basis (sometimes returning the camera with the very same problem). Since I have another Fuji camera, which has worked OK for more than two years, I conclude that this is a typical case where a camera, with "spectacular" features, was launched to the market before the normal debugging process, and we are now left paying the price. Of course for me Fuji is, from now on, a "NO NO company", and my intention is to sent my camera as a gift to Fuji's chairman with compliments for their outstanding product. In the meantime I bought a Canon A510 which, without the bell and wistles of the never performing E550, works fine for me.

Now Fuji is launching the E900 9 Megapixel camera. I would be very cautious to buy it.

  21. Also being one of the, many, unfortunate Fuji owners to suffer from the "zoom error" as it's known, I stumbled across this forum whilst trying to find a resolution to the problem.

I tried the 'twisting out until you hear a click' method that was described earlier in this thread but this didn't work so I just reversed the theory and manually wound the zoom back in. I twisted the section nearest the body in a clockwise direction so it retracted back into the camera, taking with it the other section as normal. I then turned it off an on again and Voila a working camera. (method is copied at your own risk and may not work on other models). It is ridiculous that this can happen and render the camera un-useable.

So I thank you all for sharing your experiences and I hope others find this in the future.

Also the camera I have is an F610.

  22. Hello,

Just wanted to get a sense from others of whether this was appropriate. I bought a FUJI Finpix F440 in sept 05 and used it a couple of times only. It gave me a ZOOM ERROR!. I found the suggestion to take out batteries, and spoke to a Fuji technician who offered the same "advice". Unfortunately it did not work.

I sent it in a couple of weeks ago, and they finally contacted me by email with a quote of $239 to FIX it and even said it was not under warranty as their was a clear indication of IMPACT damage that caused it.

The only problem is I never dropped it, and was very careful. After talking to the repair department 2X and a customer service manager, they lowered the bill to $109. Should I pay it, or insist that this seems to be a common problem with FUJI and that it should be covered?

    Thank you for your help.

  23. Although I'm glad to have stumbled on this site after having problems with my E550, it's disheartening to learn that Fuji is having so many problems with so little assistance to help.

I too am experiencing my less than year old camera shutting down automatically after taking 3-4 pictures. If I change the batteries out, it starts working again but for only 3-4 pics until is shuts down again. Very frustrating. I am returning this camera to Costco and will not replace it with another Fuji camera after reading these comments. Thanks for the info.

  24. I had a finepix E550 for only three weeks before 'zoom error' appeared whilst in the process of taking a once in a lifetime shot. Not cool. Took it to a fuji center in Bangkok where it was going to cost more in repairs than the original price! In a fit of frustration I pulled the lens until fully extended whilst turned on. It clicked then retracted back to normal when switched off. Fixed. I can recommend the Fuji Fury technique.

  25. I was story #19 above. Just got my E550 back from the local authorized Fuji repair shop. They couldn't fix it so had to send it to NJ for the Fuji mother ship, which they told me is severely backlogged and very slow--it took them about 6 weeks to get the camera back to me.

But, now it seems to work just fine--they replaced the main board in it. Unfortunately, there isn't a new 1-year warranty on the new board and is just considered part of the original warranty, which is now 6 months from ending. I'm keeping all body parts crossed in the hopes that nothing else will go wrong, because I really do love this camera...

Hope you all have success in fixing your probs.

  26. Hi, I got my new E550 and used it for the past week. Brand new batteries seem to only allow me to take about 15 pictures (at 2M size). Anyone out there experience the same problem and know why and how to fix it?

I had a A310 before and had no problem with it.

    Thanks.

  27. Hello,

I have a finepix f810 which i bought in July and have used it twice. I have nt used it for months and when i went to use it yesterday it says "zoom error" and the zoom doesnt even come out so i cant try any of the suggestions. Any ideas how i can fix it?

    Thanks

  28. I haven't had the Zoom Error that is listed here, but for the past couple months (about 9 -10 months after getting it), the images are coming up covered in bright white lines, and only when I use the flash in low light do the photos come out decently. I mentioned this to my family and my sister is having the same problem. Does anyone else have this or have you heard of it? Any hints as to what to do? I've contacted Fuji, but am waiting to hear.

Russell at 04:41pm on Sunday, November 27, 2005

  29. I had the exact same problem with the "zoom error" on my brand new E550. I sent it back to the website where I bought it and they promised to send a new one, but after 6 weeks waiting, I opted for the refund instead. I loved the E550, and am now debating whether to buy another one but I do not know if the "Zoom error" was a fluke or not. I have been looking into the E900 (the new fuji one) but am worried it will have the same problem. Any comments or suggestions?

Tracy at 09:14pm on Wednesday, December 07, 2005

  30. Just a quick warning, as I have recently been stung by Fujifilm. Apparantly they will not honour their legally required 12 month warranty when a product has been purchased via ebay. I can understand this when dealing with second hand products, but the camera I purchased was from a shop that was also selling via ebay, and it was in a sealed box. I sent the camera back to get repaired, and enclosed a copy of my paypal recipt as proof-of-purchase.

But instead of getting a repaired camera back I got a quote of £122 to fix it and £10 p&p. This is for a camera that retails at £150, and only cost me £5 to send back to them via special delivery!

Also their customer service is very shoddy to say the least. They said that they would honour warranties if the product was purchased from a 'proper' store. When I asked them what constituted a 'proper store', the telephone operator said 'a logo on the recipt'! I mean come on! A logo can be produced by anyone if a few minutes, and is hardly proof of legitimacy; yet they will honour those, but not ebay stores!

Simple lesson: never buy a product from Fujifilm.
    You have been warned.

  31. I bought a Fujifilm E550 a year ago and since then the photos come out white while taking the pictures in the sun or bright light. The indoor photos and the ones taken in dark comes out OK. I have tried every setting but unsuccessful. Am I missing something? Or has anybody have this same problem? Unfortunately I gifted it to my nephew and did not try before the warranty ran out. But now I am stuck with a camera half working. Please help!!!!
    Thanks.

  32. I usually don't contribute to these forums-- more of a parasite -- get the info and move on..but my experience may be useful to others as the posts here have to me:
    1) I love the E550 pictures. I have many excellent photos and haven't found the purple fringing, whitewash, low-light, or zoom issues to be a frequent problem.
    2) The zoom error finally got me. After 9 months of pulling the camera in/out of my pocket -- I think it turned on while in my pocket and the lens was stuck. I didn't have the benefit of these posts at the time, and the camera was not responding. I then removed the batteries for 20 minutes, put back in -- got a zoom error and it would then shut off. I then pushed the lens IN while I hit the power twice (on then off)and voila working camera.
    3. Twos days after the Zoom error....wear the wrist strap. I had just finished a nice pic of my parents holding my young one and as my mom grabbed the storm door -- she pulled the camera strap with the door -the camera fell 4 feet. Batteries popped out, flash opened and some dents on the plastic body, but it seemed to work ok (note I did not fully test it but should have -- i.e. taken some pics and examined for color/focusing, etc). Since my 1 year warranty was about to expire, I thought I'd send it in to NJ Fuji for a looksy -- they essentially parroted back what I asked them to look at and said it's take $100 to fix and then they'd warranty the repair fo 90 days. I called and since the camera had the dent, they attributed everything to impact damage. When asked how they assess what's wrong, they really couldn't say except that they 'test' it. When asked what will they replace and can I get a list...the answer was we don't do that. I paid it since I need the camera back, but really wish I tested it before I sent it back nonchalantly for a 'warranty' cleaning. I think it may have been working satisfactory and I could've said send it back with no charge. Now if it comes back with before and after test results, I'd be happy....but $100 is $100.

  33. I have an E550 with problems similar to those of #31 above. After a year of having the camera working more or less perfectly, I suddenly get photos that are streaked and badly overexposed in ordinary daylight. Movies, however are fine. I've been monitoring the problem for a month, trying all tricks I can think of, with no change. Dealing with Fuji repair sounds scary, based on comments above. Anyone with similar problems?

William Durham at 03:06pm on Thursday, January 19, 2006

  34. Alisha : well i had a similar problem but it was only after some water got inside the battery compartment, this shorted and corroded the batteries... the camera did not work initially but after one month started working but with the same problem as u mentioned. sent it for repairs, otherwise i bought it for the many manual controls and it has not been a dissapointment for such a low cost camera, accept for the aperture and no auto-focus assist lamp

  36. iv had my fujifilm camera E550 for a year and a half.. the 'zoom error' has hit me about a week ago. I'v been trying to find a solution to this problem for the past few days, on account of an imporatant benifit i have coming up, i had looked several places befor i found this site, i tryed all the solutions posted.. 1)taking out the batteries for a few hours..2)extending the lenses to maximum..3)pushing in the lenses after they reached maximum length, none of these worked for me.. I was considering sending it to fuji camera to the company, or bringing it to costco to see if they could fix it, but after i read the post about the dented camera i thought diffrent, I used to carry my camera around in my purse until somehow the screen cracked, it worked perfectly fine over 5 months after until now.. im wondering if they will blame the 'zoom error' on the damages it has sustained.. I'm going to continue looking for a solution..

    Thanks for the info

  37. Update to #32....
I received my camera back within 1 month of sending it in--surely because I called and asked daily how the 'rush' was going.

The camera worked great for about 22 pictures until the AF! kept showing and the display showed a lot of purple and yellow especially at high contrast areas (where white should've been). It was like the purple fringe you read about but 1000x. I called Fuji and it took two weeks to get a FEDEX slip to ship it back to them. A week after that it's still sitting in the 'vault' awaiting evaluation. They had the nerve to say after evaluation if payment is necessary, they'll contact me. BEWARE! I initially sent the camera in (working) for a check/clean and mentioned a few of the non-performance items you periodically get and they declare it not functional, charged me $100, and repaired things not needing repair, returned it to me where it worked for 22 pics, etc...needless to say, they still have it. If I had known what I know now, I would've bought a new one for $229 after rebate at BJ's.

  38. I have a Fujifilm S5000. I took some film recently - just film, no still shots. Downloaded it onto PC. Erased it from camera, all seemingly OK. But now the screen display on camera tells me the card is full. Although I cannot see the film on the camera anymore, I cannot seem to erase it either. I have taken the batteries out, recharged them, put them back in. Taken out the x-D-Picture Card (16MB), put it back in. Do you think the picture card is faulty now? Would you recommend simply buying another one - a bigger one in fact? Does this happen often?

  39. I recieved a E550 for Christmas 2005. I fell in love with my camera. Then about 4 months ago I tried to upload my pics and all of these horrible lines are all across my all of my images. I tried so many things trying to get a clear picture. Its awful and very depressing. Since I know my camera is out of warranty. I dont know what to do! Has this happened to anyone else? Now I'm afraid to buy a new camera because I feel that the reviews of new cameras have not been tested thoroughly enough. The editors just see whats new and thats it. They dont tell you how the camera works after you've had it for a year!
    Please help!

  40. I posted comment #33 a while back and now I see poor #39 with a similar, maybe identical problem. There is hope. I also got my camera at Xmas 2004 (I assume you meant 2004). I finally sucked it up and mailed my camera back to Fuji repair (800-659-3854 x3461), expecting to get charged because I was a couple of months out of warranty. Well guess what: they fixed the camera at no charge. Cost me only the $7 to UPS it back to NJ. I just got it back and it works fine! I'm a happy camper, at least until it breaks again.

William Durham at 01:12am on Saturday, March 18, 2006

  41. Not sure if this will help, but it's 'service advice' from Fuji in New Zealand regarding color irregularities with some Fuji cameras and white/purple/etc distortions:

    http://www.fujifilm.co.nz/index.asp?section=21

since they've admitted some cameras have a prob, maybe they'll then admit the prob is more widespread and honour more repair warranties?

by the way, both my sister and i have had battery problems with our e550s--the writing, playback and transfer of images to computer seemed to go berzerk when we switched from rechargeables to regular AAs when out of reach of a charger...

    good luck

  42. (Posted on behalf of Mary Pendrill)

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. You are right, it was 2004.

I had even better luck in the end. I emailed several sites and got a reply back from an 'expert' telling me I needed to 'reformat the card'. In case you should ever need to do this yourself, here is what I did:

    1. Make sure camera is in 'capture' mode - (as if you were about to take a picture).
    2. Press the 'Menu/OK' button.
    3. Scroll over to the right to SET.
    4. Scroll up to highlight SETUP and press 'menu/OK'.
    5. Scroll down to highlight format and press the right hand arrow key.
    6. Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm.

I followed all this to the letter, and lo and behold, the card cleared. (Not before I had bought another one though!! Can't have everything!!. It was a much bigger card however, which I shall get more use out of).

  43. My E550 started to put horizontal lines across images after about 200 photos (I note the number as another website noted that they also had them appear at about this number). Initially I thought it was only the standard 6MP resolution but I've discovered it on all resolutions, but not on video.
Also had the grossly over-exposed images one sunny day.
AND the camera refuses to upload images to computer when following the manual. The camera turns on and off and so the upload screws up again and again... Eventually discovered that it only works if I attach upload cable, then turn camera on, then turn computer on.
I think I want to return it for warranty for the striping and over-exposure issues.

  44. I droped my camera a few weeks ago and then it wouldn't turn on. The green light turns on like its going to open up and the lens stats to come out then it turns off after less than two seconds. how do i get it to work and if i have to bring it in somewhere how much do you think its going to cost to fix?

  45. Dont touch this thing as far as u could throw it. Ive had number of problems , but have not had zoom error.

On mine photos done inside a bar , or indoors with flash come out rubbish (either very dark or blurry) The only way around this is to mess for ages with settings e.t.c dont even bother with Auto.

Now its developed a fault where the photos that come out on any mode , are full of black lines and banding. Some are straight while others are a circular motion.

If you would like to see this drop me a line

  46. So I was just bitterly complaining to my husband about the cheap rechargeable batteries he buys because we can't seem to get more than a few pictures taken on the e550 before we need to change them, and discovered that perhaps I owe him an apoligy because it appears that others are having the same problem. I was actually looking to see if we could convert our aa batteries somehow into a lithium battery for greater longevity, but I suppose I'm grasping at straws. Is there anything that can be done about short battery life? Is this a fixable problem that Fugi can correct?

Carolyn at 05:14pm on Tuesday, April 04, 2006

  47. If you're reading this, you must be pretty hard to convince that the Fuji E550 has some significant flaws. I was the fourth person to post on this site (see "Posted by Fred on May 17, 2005 - 12:49 AM;" you can scroll back to the top to see my original complaint.) I took my E550 on a 500 mile trip specifically to take photos of a house I was contemplating buying. As soon as I turned it on the camera displayed the dreaded "Zoom Error." I removed the batteries for several hours, hoping that would correct the problem . . . it didn't. So, I went to Best Buy and bought a Sony. This was the third time the E550 failed with the fatal error that rendered the camera useless. Three strikes, and you're out! A week later, I boxed the E550, sent it to FujiFilm along with a note to KEEP IT. Maybe they can use it for spare parts for some other unfortunate owner of an E550. I also included the two letters that I wrote for the previous returns for exactly the same problem. The camera a dud; it has fatal design and/or manufacturing flaws. The company has been unresponsive to really taking care of the problem - e.g., replacing it with something that works. Of course, I wouldn't buy another product from them.

i just bought a finepix f450 and unfortunately dropped it and broke the lcd screen-does anyone know if its possible to get this fixed??

  49. So I too have the 'Zoom Error' on my E550 but my lens is fully retracted into the body so I dont seem to be able to pull it out even having taken off the lens ring. any ideas from those who have gone through the pain.
Also noticed that even with fully charged batteries the 'zoom error' also comes with a low battery warning in red. Does anyone knw if this is a battery compartment problem?

Has anyone seen or recieved any official ackowledgement of the E550 problem.

I loved the camera for the first 9 months of its life...now I am heading over to Canon for the A620.

  50. I bought a Fuji2800zoom - it was fine until it failed completely after 14 months. Fuji wanted £100 just to look at it. I should have gone elsewhere for a replacement but I got a Fuji S3500 - great until the USB port failed. Still within the waranty period but Fuji still want to charge £100 for the repair. This is not a customer friendly company. I'm going to buy a card reader for £30 and tell Fuji to piss off. I'll buy another make next time with a real waranty. Whats the point of a waranty if the cost still the consumers to bear if the product fails.

  51. I bought a fujifinpix f700 a wile back and it as been around the block a couple of times and never given me any probs i needed another camera for work so i bought an e550 big mistake normal non rechargable batteries last about 15-20 photos the ones i got with it when fully charged last about 30 photos its gone wierd when i put full charged batteries in it and press to take a photo it switches the camera of some times freezes so i took it back to the shop were i bought it and got a full refund was offerd another camera but said not a chance now my f700 an gone down in sympathy for the e500 and im at total loss at it started malfunctioning 1 day after the warrenty ran out what a t###t

stuart at 07:49pm on Friday, May 05, 2006

  52. Well, I complained to Fuji's repair people and they said that the reason they wanted to charge for the repair despite the fact that the camera is still in waranty is that the receipt showed nil price. That was because the thing was an insurance claim! When I pointed out that what I paid has no bearing on the validity of the waranty they agreed to repair the USB port for free. So at last (2 weeks later) I have the camera back. I wonder what will fail next?

Chris at 10:08am on Saturday, May 06, 2006

  53. I am having the horizontal lines problem. It is just over a year old. I am considering sending it to Fuji. However, does anyone know how much they charge just to give you an estimate? Do you think it's even worth repairing? From what I'm hearing about this camera, maybe not...

Brad at 05:09pm on Tuesday, May 23, 2006

  54. Brad: I posted comments #33 and 40 above. I had a similar problem, and was also a month past warranty expiration. I sent it in anyway expecting to be charged a fee for just looking. Instead, they just went ahead and fixed the camera for free! Give it a try.

Bill at 02:31am on Thursday, May 25, 2006

  55. Thanks Bill, I just sent it to Fuji today. Since I am only 2 weeks out of warranty, I am hoping for the same results you encountered. Thanks for the feedback...I'll keep you posted.

  56. From my Livejournal, and relevant:

    Fujifilm FinePix A345--

It's a piece of junk. Since customer service is dead, I'll just complain about it here and hope that people who have similar issues add to the rant and contribute to a culture that will shut down Fujifilm entirely. Which is a pipe dream, but such an attractive pipe dream that I will continue to dream it.

Suddenly, and for no reason, when I turn the camera on, the lens will not open. A message appears on the back screen which reads: "Zoom Error." Nothing preluded this; my handling of the camera was absolutely normal.

Suggested fixes are to change the batteries (does not work in my case), or take the batteries out for a couple of hours, then reload them (does not work in my case). A last resort solution is to physically pry the telescoping lens out, but on this model there seems to be no obvious way to do that (there's a lot of resistance when I try to do this, suggesting something might break).

This camera is just six months old.

  57. Bought an E550 as an Xmas gift, started having 'zoom error' problems sometime in January '06. Did the 'pull and twist' trick for a while, now it is hopelessly locked up. I am going to try to return the camera to see what they can do for me, but based on comments here I'm not very hopeful.

Based on my experience, I would say avoid this model like the plague, and maybe even any Fujifilm digital camera.

  58. re. message 43 above: I sent my E550 in to the company for warranty repairs a couple of weeks ago and got it back this morning. In the earlier post you'll note the problems I had (I failed to mention vertical streaks from bright spots in the pictures). Anyway, the Service Report says "The repair related to CP Replace part/s and CT Recalibrate & fully test. Spare parts fitted were:- F05203-100 LENS CONST E550 BF05203-103"

  59. Just wanted to post an update on my camera woes. I originally posted #55. After less than 2 weeks, I received my camera back from Fuji repaired under warranty even though I was 1 month out of warranty. They replaced the lens and made some adjustments. It works great again!!! So, I suggest sending it in even if you are slightly past the warranty period. Thanks for the tip Bill!!

  60. Over exporsure Outdoors and lines in the photos. I tried all types of settings to no avail. Happened just out of warranty. Sad, because the features were fantastic, but useless because I cannot depend on it. I think there should be a class action suit as it appears many have the same problem. I will not buy another FUJI anything.

  62. Just to join the list of Fujis -mine is an E510- Locked up with the Zoom Error.

I've tried the pull/twist trick to no avail so far, but then I don't want to pull too hard!

To my mind if Fuji included the zoom error in their documentation, then its an issue that theyre well, well aware of (even before the avalanche of customer complaints). So the bottom line is that they continued to release a product that still has development issues. Well from this log it seems that they haven't bothered to fix it despite the problem being common through several different models! Shoddy.

I'll give the customer service a call. Their performance will dictate whether I return to them for a new model in future. I love the E510, but the magnitude of the problem suggests that they should wake up and smell the coffee...come on Fuji!!!

  63. Got the Fujifilm E900 the end of April and today got a "Zoom Error". Did a google search and found this website. After reading some of the posts about tugging on the lense, which I did, it release something and the camera seems to be working now. I don't know about everyone else but I accidently turned on my camera while moving it and my hand was in the way of the lense while loading on. I think that might have triggered something - maybe not. Good luck everyone!

Mechanical lenses like that will wear out faster than you'd think. Overall, I was pleased with the performance of the camera but am not going to bother trying to fix this. Nikon, here I come!

  67. I have the A345 which I got after the first of this year, and now am having the 'zoom error' which so many people appear to be having. Could there be something stuck in the gears that could be doing it? It sounds sometimes like my camera is trying to get the lense out... Maybe its wishful thinking... If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be grateful! Thanks!

  68. received the E900 as a gift just slightly over a month ago. It is already a lemon. I noticed, almost right out of the box, that the first shot I would take after turning the camera on frequently had banding, striping, horizontal or contour lines. But the rest would be fine so I didn't worry about it. Well, my advice: if this starts to happen to you -- worry about it. This thing is barely used -- I needed it for research, to take photos of documents, and it has been out of the case maybe 10 times before it started to REALLY screw up. At this point, I can't get a single photo that isn't covered with ridiculous lines all over it. Not only is it a lemon but this poses a serious pain in the ass -- I am in South America, and if constumer service has been so useless to all of you trying to service it in the same continent where you bought it, well.. i can only imagine it would be a huge waste of time for me to bother from here.

  69. I just got my E550 repaired for a whopping $200.00 though it is in Warranty. The guy in the New Jersey center said that somebody had abused the camera and there was a dent in the corner (All bologne). I am the only one using it and I know I did not even take it out the box for more than 3 times as it could take any daylight pictures from day one. My advice is DON'T EVER TRUST FUJIFILM COMPANY and their products and THEIR LOUSY SERVICE. I am going after them for sure. I have already talked to a class action suite lawyer and he wants me to collect most E550 victims name and address through a URL. Please wait for the URL as soon as he puts it out. We will unite and bring down FUJIFILM altogether.

Vernon MacDoanld at 05:43pm on Thursday, July 20, 2006

  75. Vernon, I am no expert about much of anything, and not familiar with your camera, but, it appears that, if you have indeed tried every setting, the camera is not responding to automatic adjustments that it does itself. My first impression was that you had manually selected a high ASA setting, and, possibly if ASA is on "AUTO', it may be stuck on it's highest value. If the aperture is stuck wide open, or the speed is stuck at a slow speed you would have similar symptoms. I would bring the camera to the dealer and have them comfirm your plight, and possibly help you.
Being "out of warranty" is sometimes a store's call, and their compassion will sometimes be a suprise to us. I had the LED screen on my laptop go out after 6 months past the 1 year warranty, the good folks at Sony replaced it free, I paid about $8.00 for shipping, to and from Hiroshima.
Your camera shop may, I say, may, suprise you, at least they will surely confirm what is wrong, or at least give you their opinion.
    Good luck!
PS. Sometimes a store, if they know you well, will sell you an item that has a warranty card, and they will not stamp the card with a date, this will give you an option to have a, kinda, trial period, so to speak, in case problems develop later on!
( I have heard about this, of course I don't know about it personally!)

  77. I just picked up a used A310 off eBay, and got the Zoom Error on the 2nd day, so found this site by Googling. So far, I've had fair luck with manual extension or retraction, but today the lens was stuck fully retracted, with no way to grasp it. I assumed it might be insufficient battery power, even though it doesn't indicate a low charge. Putting in new batteries freed it up, after which it worked with the older batteries. I also powered it up with the lens facing down, so gravity might assist.

I've been lucky so far, in being able to get it to recover, but it sure is a pain!

Somebody commented about the battery compartment being involved, and I'm hoping that cleaning the terminals may help.

John at 11:15pm on Tuesday, August 01, 2006

  78. Back again. After inspecting the battery contacts, they seemed clean enough, but I noticed that the inner contacts are similar to flashlight contacts or even the middle contact of an incandescent bulb fixture - they're just a strip of metal, bent upwards to provide tension for contact with the batteries. As with flashlights or incandescent bulb fixtures, these tabs can lose tension over time, and this can be improved by sticking a screwdriver under the tab and lifting it enough that you actually bend it to a higher elevation. This improves the tension and provides better contact.

I just did it with mine, and got two faultless lens extensions when turning it on and off. That's not enough to prove the benefit, but it can't have hurt, either.

P.S. Don't try this on an incandescent bulb fixture without ensuring that the power's off!

John at 11:44pm on Tuesday, August 01, 2006

  79. Ok, I get it: don't buy any more fuji's! But guess what...I already bought an E550 just over a year ago, and am now having the white lines and overexposure problem. I really can't afford another camera right now, and I love this one to pieces (never had a problem with it before)... If I send it to Fuji now does anyone know if they will fix it at little or no charge since it's a problem they seem to encounter often? Also, how quickly will they fix it? I'm leaving for school again in a month!

Donna at 12:19am on Tuesday, August 08, 2006

  80. (posted 32 and 37). In reply to #79...
The first time I sent it in, it took one month to get it back (and in worse condition than before). I did ask for RUSH and it was over the holidays. The second time, they sent a refurbished camera (which actually comes from Japan) and it comes with a 6 month warranty. It's still working 7 months later. So if you love the pics (I do) it was worth the $100. So, anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks, my guess.

Mike at 01:04am on Tuesday, August 08, 2006

  81. Thanks for the info, Mike. I'll keep that in mind. I love the pix enough that 100 bucks is worth getting the thing to work properly again.

Donna at 01:24am on Tuesday, August 08, 2006

  82. Hi Donna,

I posted #59 above. I sent my camera in for the problem you are having (based on another persons recomendation). I got it back in less than 2 weeks, and much to my surprise they covered it under warranty even though it was just out of warranty! Just send a note along with your camera indicating that the problem was first noticed while under warranty (which was true in our case). Hopefully they will cover it for you to. Good luck!

Brad at 02:33am on Tuesday, August 08, 2006

  83. Thanks, Brad! My camera is just out of warranty as well, so I'll definitely try that.

  84. I just wanted to share my experience regarding battery life and the camera shutting off at weird times...using non-rechargable batteries in this camera just doesn't work (they will last 5-6 pictures at most). I bought two sets of rechargable Duracell batteries specifically for the camera, and they work great! They last almost two full days of continuous shooting (still and video)! Just wanted to share in case anyone was still having problems with this (and to share something positive about this camera!)

Donna at 12:38pm on Tuesday, August 08, 2006

  85. Donna --

Just to repeat what Mike and Brad said, I posted #33 and #40 above. Sounds like my same problem. Camera was just out of warranty also, but they fixed it for free. It's still working fine 6 months later. Repairs did take a while, 4 weeks maybe, so hustle.

  86. I just thought I'd add to the misery here. I too have a piece of crap Fuji, I bought it December of 2004 and I've aboslutely loved it, great picture quality and easy to use, I even bought my mom one (boy is she going to hate me when it breaks!) I have the E550 and 2 days ago I was using it with no problem, set it on the table, came back 15 minutes later and it had the dreaded 'zoom error'. I'm obviously way past warranty so I guess my only choice is to buy something else but I thought I should add to this posting and warn others who may stumble upon this while researching this camera... DO NOT BUY IT!!!

  87. Just wanted to update you on #11. I sent the camera into Fuji and after a very long time, they fixed it for free. Been working great for almost a year now. It was completely out of warranty but they fixed it anyway. My daughter had a similar problem, camera was out of warranty by at least a year. She sent it in and they replaced her camera. Both times we were told they would call us and give us an estimate. But they fixed or replaced instead. So, give it a try and send it in even if it is well after the warranty. What have you got to lose!

  88. I got a Fugi E500 about a year ago, and it has been working great every since. Now every time a put brand new batteries in my camera, afetr about 5 min., it says batt. low and turns off. What can I do.

    PS. I lost my recipt.

    C.C. Todd at 02:50am on Monday, August 14, 2006

  89. C.C. Todd --

Try buying a set of Duracell NiMH rechargable batteries (like this one at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009VDP8/ref=pd_sim_hpc_1_img/104-2314352-5329505?ie=UTF8 ) and see how that works. I could never use regular akaline batteries in my E550 more than a few minutes, but the rechargables work for days of continuous use. I suggest buying two sets of batteries and a charger, so you always have one set ready to go.

Donna at 03:02am on Monday, August 14, 2006

  90. I dropped off my E550 at Fuji a couple of days ago for that white lines problem, and they said it should be ready in 2 weeks or less at no charge! smile If anyone else has this problem, definitely give Fuji a call! They'll fix it for little or no cost even if you are out of warranty.

Donna at 03:04am on Monday, August 14, 2006

  91. C.C. Todd, IMHO, you seem to have, either a contact problem, or a problem the company / shop needs to look at. If it were my camera, I would 1. Ensure the batteries are 100%. 2, Clean the contacts and ensure that the inner contact has spring in it so as to make positive contact. 3. Try the camera, if it still has a problem, take the batteries out and see if they are drained, if they are you have a problem that the camera shop/ maker needs to advise you on. 4. If the batteries are still 100%, try a more agressive cleaning and double check all the spring loaded contacts too. Sometimes the spring will be flattened for various reasons, therefore not providing a good, forceful, contact.
Read your manual for the optimum battery useage, concerning the type, sometimes rechargeable batteries arn't recommended. I am not familiar with your camera.
Good luck and I hope you find the problem is fixable by you!

  92. Hi everybody. I fell for the awesome features too. But after about a year my E550 started taking washed out pictures in daylight and I get streaks if I shoot near a light source.
I got mine as an "open box" from Best Buy so I got a bit of a deal on it, but I guess the joke was on me. I am all for suing these guys, if we can get a class action together.
I might try sending it in to Fuji, but I really needed it for Labor Day weekend, so I might just buy another one(definitely not a Fuji).

  93. I posted # 86 above and just wanted to let everyone know that I've decided not to bother with the hassle or expense of sending my Fuji in, instead I bought the SONY H2 when it was on sale 2 weeks ago at Best Buy and it's amazing, I absolutely love it, and so far I have not found any bad reviews about it either. It has amazing picture quality, they are crystal clear, not to mention the 12x zoom! I couldn't ask for more. I have heard there's a Cannon that is comparable too that is really good and one of the guys I work with has it and likes the fact that you can rotate the view finder, he likes to make it look like he's not actually taking a picture so people don't stop and pose.

  94. Had a E550 for just over a year and it has just started with the "overexposed outdoors/lines through" problems mentioned above. This is the third Fuji I have had that has developed the EXACT same problem. The other two cameras were F410's. I took both of the F410's back to Costco (both out of warranty) and they gave me CASH back on both occasions which I foolishly spent on replacement Fujis back in Costco. From talking to Costco staff their guarantee on electricals lasts as long as you are a member (they don't advertise this though) !!
Worth remembering as they don't quibble.
This one (E550) is going back to Costco today. It will be embarrassing to say that this is my third from them with exactly the same problem ! There is definitely something inherently wrong with the design of these Fujis. This is my last one (which is annoying because I now have a few Fuji XD cards of no use (unless I buy an Olympus).

  95. you guys are all a bunch of complainers, so you bought a cheep camera and it acts cheep, meh? money is only money, if you want a camera that will not give you any problems... i have a solution, steal one cause then you cannot complain about it costing to much, like you guys sound like a bunch of whining 2 year olds
suk it up, ive been using my fuji cameras for years n the only problem ive had is that it gone run over by my freind in a wheelchair and the 2 inch screen cracked, other than that ive had no problems,
and i asked fuji if they would repair my camera from being run over, and they said that it would cost me $100 $50 for parts and $50 for labour, but i didn't run to a photoblog and cry and complain, i suked it up and paid the cash

Brendan at 10:59pm on Monday, August 28, 2006

  96. Brendan, there are alot of folks here that paid hard-earned money for a product that was less than expected in quality and performance. I commend folks for speaking out, it's not exactily complaining, it's more of an eposure of the truth. In Japan there is a common trend to "Suck-it-up" and say nothing when something is wrong, it's called "Gamon". It is the perfect word for cowards!
The obvious misgivings of a camera company will never change if we take your attitude as our way of life.
We are very happy that you, and millions of others , have had good luck with Fuji, sorry that you have the inspiration to belittle those with problems.

nick in japan at 04:19am on Tuesday, August 29, 2006

  97. Brendan, please be polite. It's your own fault that your camera broke, so you are right that you can't complain about paying to fix it. But for most others posting here, a problem developed with the camera that was in no way the user's fault, myself included, so we are not to blame and therefore have the right to be upset when Fuji charges us to have it fixed. No one here has whined. I'm actually glad so many came here to report the overexposure problem...it let me know that when my camera had the same issue that it was not uncommon.

  98. Update on Post 94.
Costco gave me my money back - no issue, and the "techy" bloke there commented that they have had a lot of Fuji returns recently, particularly the E and F series ! Food for thought....

  99. We have had a S5000 for several years now. Works great!!! Never a problem with it. Wife got an A500 for her birthday last month from her mother.

I noticed right off the thing sucks down batteries, even duracell rechargables. So she's used the camera 3 times now in one month and Zoom Error. Will most likely return to store for refund and buy another brand if receipt can be found.

And we were so happy with our S5000, it's a shame I have to drop Fuji as a reliable company now.

  100. I have a E550. The thing locks up after a picture or two even with new batteries. Taking the batteries out didn't fix it. It just dies with the lens out after a picture is taken. Has anyone found a solution?

Ken at 12:50am on Monday, September 04, 2006

  101. I wrote #18 & was recently asked for advice on 'zoom error'. The supplier denied knowledge of the problem. 4 new batteries, still no joy. It's been in lock-down for 8 months, until I realised an associate works for fuji. My S7000 is now in for a 'free service' and I will note what's said. meanwhile I borrow a cheapy. I did love my camera but I won't trust it to travel. I'll NEVER go near this company again-even if the camera functions. Stuff the cost, its corrupt to feed a company making money off their faults.

  102. I have had the E550 for about 2 years now and have loved it. No problems, until now. Hopefully someone can give me some advice on how I might be able to fix it. I took about 20 pictures the other day, went to download them to my computer and got an error message. I tried again, then it told me there are no images. The xD card usually holds 169 pictures and now it says there is room for 145. So it seems the pictures are still on there, but the camera tells me no images. I took it to Walgreens and put it in there machine to make sure it wasn't my computer and nothing. I have even downloaded other pictures since then. Any thoughts??

Laurie at 04:25am on Friday, September 08, 2006

  103. If it was my card, I would ensure that the contact points in the camera, and on the card were clean, still no luck then I would search for a program that recovers card data.
If the card had been formatted than there would be nothing left, it appears that the card is unable to transmit data due to corruptness ( is that a word?) internally.
I had a similar problem, I gave up trying to retrieve the images, tried to format the MS, no luck, I sent the MS to Sony and they were able to format it.
You might try taking a few more images, nothing important, and again try to view them before you decide on retrieval, or formatting.
I am no expert in this area, you may want to wait for more responses to this question, I hope you didn't lose a priceless image!
    Good luck!
PS: This is one of the reasons I don't like to use cards with very large capacities, stuff happens!

nick in japan at 05:08am on Friday, September 08, 2006

  104. Laurie, just a thought.. has that card been inserted into another camera, one other than your E550?

nick in japan at 06:57am on Friday, September 08, 2006

  105. Thank you so much for the response Nick. The card has only ever been used in my E550. I have taken a few more pictures and they have downloaded to my computer fine, but those other ones are still lingering in there smile

After I have thought about it some more, my batteries went dead that day. I had to put others in my camera until the fuji ones recharged. Wonder if that would have anything to do with it.

Laurie at 01:56pm on Friday, September 08, 2006

  106. If your camera battery went low while you were downloading images
to the computer, it likely corrupted your xD card. Formatting the card
in the camera will clear up the problem, but will erase all the pictures,
so do the recovery suggested by Nick prior to any formatting.

GARY POGODA at 03:41pm on Friday, September 08, 2006

  107. laurie, my sister had a very similar problem with a card apparently becoming corrupted (i wrote a couple other postings above, including #41). i believe her card failure was also after the batteries ran out - i think we tied it to the fact that we used regular batteries after our rechargeables ran on a trip when we didn't have the recharger with us. i ended up having some weird things go on with my pics at that point as well--we both have e550s, by the way.

she did end up getting the pics recovered, think it was at the camera store where she bought the camera.

by all means, DON'T format the card if you're at all interested in saving the pictures--take the card into several camera and photo developing places (the good, professional kind, not the conveyor belt-done-in-an-hour places in a mall) and i bet someone can recover them for you.

    good luck to you!

  108. Well, I finally got my camera back from Fuji, and the white lines problem and overexposure problem are fixed, but now there's this black bar that keeps appearing at the top of all my photos! So I guess they broke something else in the process of fixing it...

I am starting to hate Fuji. I'll be bringing it back to them and letting them know that within the next few days.

  109. My Fuji F11 zoom got stuck after turning the camera off. Only 6 months old. Sent for repair and the answer was ..'impact damage' . It seems that consumers are paying for Fuji's design fault. No major camera suffers from this design fault. The zoom lens mosty withdraws in these circmstances. Will neer buy from a company that makes consumers pay for its design fault.

  110. I'm an early teen and had saved my pocket money for a few years. When I had enough I went out and bought, guess what, a Fujifilm camera. It's only been 2 months and the dreaded 'zoom error' has appeared. From the responses above I'm really worried and I can't find the reciet. To have spent all my money on this camera I'm very angry that it has already broken through no fault of my own. Is there no hope?

  111. My E500 is 1 year old. It consumes batteries like mad. sometimes it takes lousy pics. on zoom and sometimes when it clicks, but no picture recorded.

for me no more fuji cameras again.

  112. ok. back again (#18 & 101) Fuji found that the ZOOM ERROR written across the screen of my S7000 for the last year doesn't exist! My lesson- it doesn't pay to buy expensive. This is unfortunately a commodity culture bent on disposable spending and Fuji have jumped on board. So..oh cheap Olympus camera in the sale bins here I come!

  113. Thought I might have some joy posting here. I've read a lot of the articles and it seems that a lot of people are breaking there cameras and the like. I'm looking for a broken camera. A fujifilm f450 to be precise. There as a post from February here by a gentleman whose camera got soaked and now it doesnt work, so if he reads this regularly perhaps he could help. The reason I need a broken one is because when I bought my camera I took out 5 years cover against any accidental repars. I've since had my camera stolen and so rather buying a new one and losing my cover, I'd much rather take a broken one off someones hands, i'll pay handsomely, and make use of the warranty, and final get one over on those wicked insurance companies. If you have any suggestions, ie sites that might specialise in broken cameras, any help would be much appreciated. I've been trying ebay and nearly had some joy but was outbidded (boo hoo). Anyway thanks for reading if you want to contact me just send me a message via myspace.com/crysthamexican. Thank You

  114. To post #113:

First of all, what you are proposing is fraud. I can sympathize with you concerning having your camera stolen, that really sucks!! However, using someone elses camera that is not covered under your warranty is fraud. I understand that you don't like insurance companies, but to tell you the truth, you are not hurting them, you are actually hurting everyone. You see, when you make a claim, the insurance company pays it out, but in the end they don't lose a dime. They simply raise everyones premiums to cover their payouts. So, next time you buy a camera and get the extended warranty, it will likely cost you (and everone else) more. So, it is not really the insurance companies that are responsible for high premuims, it is the people who commit fraud. Oh, and by the way, what you are trying to do will likely not work anyways because on your warranty is also the serial number on your camera. It will no match the camera that you are trying to obtain.

I hope this message was both helpful and educational.

  115. hey i found a solution to mine! it had the zoom error problem on the e510. i just twisted the lens with my hand (pushed through the resistance not caring if i would break it). it then snapped back into place and now it works fine! this is the most technical solution of course. haha.

  116. Amazing, this is the lamest piece of *** that has the temerity to call itself a camera. I bought it only because I needed something quick and cheap-ish to snap pictures of items I wanted to sell on eBay, I have enough "real" cameras to want a digicam, but this did not even meet my already-low expectations. It gave me a Zoom Error the very first time I turned it on, after setting the time/date. The lens just pops out, opens, and then retracts again, all the time saying "Zoom Error". I have got to return it to the seller and get a full refund. I'm definitely sticking to proper, manual FILM cameras which don't fail inexplicably after 6 months. rasberry

  119. I travel for work, but have the opportunity to see a lot of the world in the process. I first had a S7000 (which took excellent pictures), but was a little too bulky to carry around, so I did some research and found that the e550 met my needs. It took awesome pictures and worked great for 11 months. This past September the camera wouldn't open (it didn't state zoom error, but it definitely wouldn't open). After some fidgeting and pulling we managed to get it to work again and it worked fine for a few days. I took it with me on my last trip and it started shutting down for no apparent reason. At the beginning of the year I had the same problem as some of the people above (I ran out of my rechargeable batteries and had to use the store bought ones, the camera ate through them within 10 pictures). I did notice that it would shut down, but just figured it had to do with the battery. I tried what others recommended, pulling on the lens (didn't work), taking out the batteries for a while (only worked for 2 pictures), and reformatting (also didn't work). I have sent out a request to Fuji, but the more I read the comments on this site the more I am inclined to purchase a new camera, but not from Fuji. I will wait to see what Fuji has to say, but I am not going to hold my breath.

  120. I feel your frustration, Hannah!
Wonderful way to let the entire world know about product problems, and, even the kudos!
We are at the begining of digital photography, and problems will pop up from time to time, faith in a company builds, or falls apart. From your comment, I read a bit of mixed emotions, personally, I believe alot of GREAT stuff comes from Fuji, and there is a compatibility factor that is important to consider too, maybe you have extra batteries, accessories that would work with other Fuji stuff. Guess what I'm trying to say is that Fuji was a big part of your life for 11 months, maybe it could continue longer, without completely writing them off!
    Good luck, good shooting!

  121. Hi, I stumbled on this forum recently as my camera came up with the "zoom error" problem. However, I’ve had mine for two years now and have a lot of amazing photos to go with it. I spoke to a guy about fixing my camera as my warranty has expired. I already had my camera fixed once because half the screen projected itself the wrong way and did the same to the photos once I transferred them onto my computer. The bloke said that it would cost a minimum of £130 not including parts or handling and actually recommended fixing it myself. I thought this camera was amazing for what it was but it seems such a shame to be let down by manufacturing floors. I was wondering if anyone knew the basics of this camera enough to fix it. I've literally ripped it apart but I’m actually finding it difficult to see what went wrong in that there isn’t a huge amount of components in it and when tested, they seem fine. Pretty relieved that I didn’t pay the money to get it fixed but still need some advice on how to fix it myself, anyone?

  123. Yikes! Camera repair MUST be left to trained folks, kinda like brain-surgery!
Some of us have training in component repair, but, even with an over-powering "can-do" attitude, there is a common-sense factor that has to be considered. Believe me, without specific training, proper tools, special tools and most importantly, an up-to-date repair manual and illustrated Parts Breakdown, NO attempt to repair should even be considered!
I use a watch repair fella to clean and adjust my MANUAL cameras and lenses, he is smart enough not to touch electronic stuff and will go as far as mechanical construction will let him, but even with manual lenses, there are special tools that prevent going deeper.
Frugality is good, common sense is better!
RIP dear E550, I'm afraid your attempt to save it's life was in vain!
Time to move on, the pain is real, misery is a choice!
    Good luck and good shooting!

I am unable to toggle the flash ON/OFF/RED EYE. Has anyone got any ideas please?

  125. Thanks to all you brave souls for posting to this site. I was considering buying the E550 because of all it's fine features and reasonable price. But what good is that when it doesn't work, and even worse, when the company won't address the problems and make them right when it knows they are legion. I bought and was very happy with a Fuji SLR for years, but will look elsewhere now for the new generation digital cameras.

I have another problem with my fuji E550 in that the flash cover distance is approx. 10 ft only and if I try to zoom in , the picture will be underexposed.

Does any one out there have the same problems or some one has a sollution to my problems ?

Mark Goldstein at 10:21am on Friday, December 01, 2006

  127. # 126, a common ailment with weany flashes especially!
Zooming to a specific location, let's say, a face, has reduced the area affected by the fash dramatically, and the flash, unless dedicated to a zoom mode, will read a general bounce-back light of the entire field of view.
So what do we do? Yep, you got it! get closer, use a higher ASA setting, or place some reflectors in positions that will reflect all that extraneous light, directing it to the face.
I'd just step closer and do some test shots until it looked good, remembering how far you are away from the subject, and also the zoom setting.. that way you wont have to repeat the tests!
    Good shooting to you!

  128. Someone said this above:
"# received the E900 as a gift just slightly over a month ago. It is already a lemon. I noticed, almost right out of the box, that the first shot I would take after turning the camera on frequently had banding, striping, horizontal or contour lines. But the rest would be fine so I didn't worry about it. Well, my advice: if this starts to happen to you -- worry about it. This thing is barely used ... and it has been out of the case maybe 10 times before it started to REALLY screw up. At this point, I can't get a single photo that isn't covered with ridiculous lines all over it. Not only is it a lemon but this poses a serious pain in the ass ....
Posted by Chris on Jul 13, 2006 - 03:13 AM"

I have had exactly the same problem...and the blithe young man I just spoke with at Fuji repair HQ acted as if this was 1) not a bug concern (though I have had to ship it to Fuji at a cost of almost $25) and 2) that he didn't think it had been so much of a concern withthe E900. BS...and how can the repair reps not know about these problems when I can find the same consumer problems in five minutes on the web?

  129. I have a A310 in a shelve somewhere. After 1 year use it gived me the zoom error message. Notrhing worked: nor pulling or pushing zoom, twisting, removing batteries, nothing. On top of it, the damn thing eats batteries like there is no tomorrow~, AND does not respond fast enough to take a snapshot of a moving action. My conclusion? I pais 280 Euros by an expensive piece of... yeah, the "s" word. Fuji? Never again!

ed at 12:25am on Sunday, December 03, 2006

  130. I have experienced both the zoom error problem (twice) and the battery life problem (twice). Fuji fixed the zoom error for me twice under warranty. Then the E550 developed the battery life problem. I sent the camera back. Fuji "fixed" it, but when I got the camera back, the problem was still there. It was dying after only 10-20 pictures, even with new batteries. I tested the batteries after using them and the voltage had dropped from 1.6V down to 1.2V, a sure sign that the batteries are, in fact, being depleted. It's not an intermittent contact problem. So I sent the camera back AGAIN. This time I requested they replace it with a different unit, which they did, under warranty. I got a refurbished E550, but IT HAS THE SAME BATTERY LIFE PROBLEM! What the heck! I am giving up on this dog, but I am going to contact Fuji one more time and try to push my way up the manager chain to try to get a straight answer on the problems with this camera. Stay tuned. This is ridiculous.

  131. #127.. I forgot to mention that with most cameras, a selection of "Auto", "Flash-ON", and "Redeye" symbol are usually the basics, some cameras have more.. Its important to know that in "Auto", the camera sensor reads all the light subjected to it and determines if flash is needed, I NEVER shoot in "Auto", "On" (forced flash) ensures the flash always works, the amount of strength is a trial situation in most cases.
I'm not sure if the redeye flash feature is forced or not, it too may be an "auto" feature too, Gary would know I'm sure, as he has used flash qiute a bit I'm sure.
    Good luck!

  133. I have had an E550 for almost two years now. In the past few months it had been freezing frequently when I took pictures and almost always seemed to have a low battery warning. I tried switching to higher capacity batteries (2500) and leaving the batteries out of the camera for a while to "reset" it. These things did not work. Then I switched to a fresh memory card (exact same size (512) and make (Olympus) as the prior memory card, but with no pictures on it). I have not had freeze problems or low battery problems since (23 pictures over about a month's time). My prior card had many pictures on it (I just left them on so I could show others). Anyway, I am thinking that a loaded up memory card somehow was causing the problem. I guess time will tell if the problem is really fixed for if this is just a nice break from the freezing.

  135. This is in response to post 133 by Mike. I tried it too and so far it's been working fine. It would be absolutely fabulous if this is the solution (my fiance is trying to convince me not to be too excited, but I love this camera and ll the research I have done on other cameras just doesn't have all the features I am looking for, not to mention, I don't want to spend another $300 for a new camera). Thank you Mike. I will let everyone know if it continues to work.

Oh... p.s. I got a response from Fuji and they told me to send it to them via fedex (I live in NJ, so their location is not far from me). I think I'll just let the new card work for a while and see if that solves it before I send it away.

  140. This is a follow up to post 133. Another 3 weeks and 56 more pictures. The camera is hanging in there (knock on wood). I allowed the number of pictures on the memory card to accumulate to around 25 or so and I got a low battery warning, but the camera did not freeze when I took a few more pictures. I cleared off the pictures, recharged the batteries and have been fine since. This is much better performance than I was seeing prior to changing the memory card (when it seemed to freeze every five pictures or so). Admittedly, having to take the pictures off the card frequently is not ideal, but I can live with it if the camera doesn't freeze up any more. Sorry to hear this did not solve Hannah's problem. I was hoping that this would work for other people, but maybe my problem was different from the "zoom error" problem discussed above.

As a post script, I did call Fujifilm about the problem prior to my 133 post. They offered no help over the phone and told me to send the camera in so they could take a look at it (pretty sure I know how that was going to turn out $$$).

  142. You guys have been very helpful. I was about to buy a slightly used E900 today, I'm now reconsidering. I was replacing an Olympus C3000. Nothing wrong with it, just old. I've had it since 2001, never had a problem!
Better stick to Olympus or Canon! Thanks.

  143. omgggggggg

soo a few days after posting a remark about how my camera was broken, i decided to buy a new one... but right before confirming my order I felt like banging my camera on the floor two times and then i blew in the lens cap.. but the batteries back in.....

and then BAMMM it turned on and works perfectly again..... so i suggest hitting your camera on the floor if you need it to work for you........

  144. We have 2 e550's out of warranty. Mine has suddenly developed a fault which I have read about elsewhere but no-one here has mentioned: the LCD is just white all the time. Not a battery problem, I have checked that, and anyway the camera works perfectly and the pictures can be downloaded and everything. But only on auto and through the viewfinder of course, because can't see any menus or anything. Fuji UK want £100 to fix it - not worth it, could get a new e900 for £130. But nervous now having read all the above. Any suggestions for this whiteout problem?

Roger at 09:22pm on Monday, January 01, 2007

  145. I recently bought 2 E550's for presents, unfortunatly both cameras froze after 4 flash photos.
I contacted Fuji and they told me that the normal batteries I was using were not powerful enough. These excellent cameras are power hungry. The minimum battery power should be 1700mAh.
I have just bought rechargable batteries with 2500mAh and taken 30 flash photos without the camera freezing.
I hope my comments will be of use to others.

John at 06:08pm on Thursday, January 04, 2007

  146. Re 144 and 145 - Unfortunately I am already using brand new 2500mAh rechargeables. Occasionally my LCD works still, but mostly when I switch on it is just white. Same batteries work fine in my wife's E550, so not them to blame.

  147. OH MY GOD!!!!! After the proverbial zoom error on my A345, I tried the 'pulling out the lens' trick. I totally stuffed it. Just threw it in the garbage bin. C'est la vie. Can anyone (with no vested interest) recommend a good (reasonably priced) compact camera?

penny at 01:10am on Wednesday, January 10, 2007

  148. Oh Oh. I just bought a refurbished E-550 from ebay and NOW I see these posts. The seller says the camera had been refurbished by Fuji. Gee, I wonder why it had to go back to them in the first place? I am probably going to resell this thing as soon as it gets to me. The other cameras on my list were: Canon A540,620,630, 700 and 710 IS, Kodak DX7630, and the Sony DSC W7.I want a camera w an optical viewfinder, at least 3X zoom, price around $150 to $300, fast shutter and good low light performance. Any other recommendations?

  149. #148 -
I replaced my E550 with a SONY DSC-H2 and absolutely LOVE it!!! I haven't had any problems what so ever, it takes beautiful crystal clear pictures, AND has 12x zoom! It's usually about $350 but I happened to get mine at Best Buy on sale for $300, so you can find it in your price range if you watch for sales.

  150. Thanks for the recommendation on the Sony DCS H2 camera. Unfortunately, the EVF is a deal killer for me as I much prefer an optical finder. The Sony is certainly one of the odder looking cameras I've seen, and there is no way you could just slip it in your pocket and run around during the day, but the specs on it are truly great. Many thanks for the input. I will continue my endless web searching.

steve marino at 07:53pm on Monday, January 15, 2007

  151. The remedy listed by Bobbomo just solved my "zoom error" problem, too. The trick is to pull the lens out even further than you think; you really will hear a distinct "click", then turn the camera off and on again.

Annabanana at 05:56am on Saturday, January 20, 2007

  152. In reply to #144, i've been searching for a solution for the exact same problem with the lcd being white all the time, makes the camera pretty impossible to use as you have to use the viewfinder and cant use any menus or settings other than auto. £100 seems a lot considering the price to purchase a new digital camera.

juciefroot at 12:53pm on Monday, January 22, 2007

  153. My E550 also has the low battery issue. With fresh batteries (I've tried several different types) I'm lucky to get 10 pictures before the thing dies.

It was a very disappointing discovery given that my last digital camera only changed batteries about once every four months of casual usage.

  154. I just got a Samsung digital camera for Christmas, and my brother dropped it so now the lens won't fully extend and also the screen displays the dreaded "Zoom Error!" I've tried pulling the lens out but its jammed in so I can't get it out! Someone please HELP!

  155. my E550 HAD been working just fine and now after about two years I get all these nasty gray lines and ripples in all my shots. I tried all types of exposures and lighting but still the same outcome in one degree or another. I thought I was at fault but after reading all these submissions I know "It aint me" Has anyone out there sent their camera back to Fuji for this problem ? What happened ?

  156. have problems with Sony DCRTRV 250E video camera, its been back to Sony Three times since October, in my umble opinion it has a soound fault which picks up the sound of the tape motor when recording. Sony state and I quote 'WARNING ! The noticed noise is normal (within specifications). Comparisons with other camcorders from same model were done.' Have had videos cameras over 30 years and not had such problem with recorded noise such as this, any onw else had same trouble. Please advise

  158. Hi, I've had a Fuji Finepix F410 for about three and a half years and it has been a fine thing until yesterday. Suddenly it wouldn't focus on anything at all and all photos are blurry and very soft. For the past year or so it has been replaced by a Sony DSC-S90 but I like having the Fuji for back up. Anyone else had this problem or anyone got a sollution?

  160. In reply to #158, we had this issue with our E550. It had to go back to the factory to re-calibrate the autofocus. Since then, we have had 2 years good use. Suggestion: When you send it off, send example photos from the F410 and your other camera of the same subject. Eliminates any argument about amount of light, etc.

  161. Re 144 and 152: the white LCD problem. The problem was coming and going at random, nothing to do with batteries. Having nothing to lose, I tried someone else's solution for a different (lens) problem: I switched the E550 off and gave it a smart whack with the palm of my hand. It worked - LCD back in action at time of writing, but who knows for how long.

Roger at 10:47pm on Monday, April 16, 2007

  162. So... This in response to Penny (post 147), who asked if there was anyone out here without a vested interest in a particular camera. If it weren't for the zoom error I still would have recommended the E550, however, this is not the case and the zoom error still persists.

I just purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2. I absolutely love it and is pretty comparable (if not better) than the E550. I have to say it take a little getting used to and I am still learning the ins and outs, but all the research pointed towards this camera.

So far it has been fabulous. It comes with a rechargeable lithium battery (which takes about 2 hours to charge). It has 10.2 mega pixels, 4x optical zoom, 16:9 ratio, 4:3 ratio, and 3:2 ratio. There is no view finder, just a very large clear screen (which I have no problem with). It has many manual settings and even has a macro/micro focus setting (which is excellent). I have convinced three different people (who are looking for new cameras to purchase it... just based on letting them use it for a few pictures and letting them see the results). The lens is a leica lens, which is top of the line. It has video, with audio. Plus, the coolest feature that I haven't seen on other cameras is that you can actually view pictures by a calendar (zoom out in the view setting, and you can see what days you took pictures).

I purchased a 4gb SD picture card from panasonic, so I could take tons of pictures... the battery life has been fabulous (2-3 days of continuous shooting before having to recharge... and by that time period I mean well over 400 pictures and video too!). I have to say that it took me a while to get over the disappointment of losing the E550 (still haven't trashed it yet), but I wouldn't trade my lumix for anything. I have heard people complain about taking pictures at night, but I chalk that up to inexperience, because my night shots turn out great (as long as you have a steady hand or a tripod and use the correct setting or know how to use the manual setting).

To Mike (post 140)... I really wish it had worked, because the camera used to be great, but that just didn't cut it anymore. :o(

  163. Hi David!

Fuji Finepix F410 is a very good model, with some advanced features. Probably your camera's optics damaged. In this case it doesn't worth repairing. If you like this model buy another or I suggest to try F470. You can find many informations at Fuji F470

Zoltan at 07:48am on Saturday, April 21, 2007

  164. I have a Fujifilm Digital Camera (FinePix F450) which was bought for me as a present in July 2005.
Up until yesterday it has worked perfectly and has provided excellent photo’s, but today for no apparent reason (no accidents, not too hot or cold etc), there is no image showing on the LCD screen. I had just successfully downloaded some pictures to my laptop and charged the camera, but next time I went to use it, there was no image.
    Everything else seems fine.
The writing on the LCD comes on as usual.
    The lens extends and retracts.
    The viewfinder lamp is green.
The battery icon shows up as all white, not flashing, and stays on for 3 seconds.
I can turn the LCD screen off and on.
    I have formatted it.
    I have reset it.

Can you help please. I am currently touring Portugal, so cannot take it to a dealerto look at.

    Thanks, Jan Scrivens

  165. Oh, my E550, have loved it loved it loved it, have travelled the world for almost 2yrs with it with a couple of thousand fantastic pics.

BUT have also endured horrible moments with screen freezes and battery errors at the worst poss moments (posted a couple of other times above). I had it 'repaired' last year by Fuji while still under warranty but in the past few months it has started once again to have the same exact probs off and on (warranty is now expired). I'm lucky enough to live overseas, but that doesn't help when it comes to dealing with Fuji service...

But now a tiny 1 ft fall onto soft grass while turned on jammed the lens very slightly to one side and created the nasty zoom error... I tried to gently rock it back into alignment and then tried the pull-out-the-lens trick and only succeeded in somehow unscrewing and pulling off the main silver lens ring nearest the body - ooops...

I can't seem to find a way to put it back on/click it in so unless anyone here has any advice, I think I'm finally giving up on this ALMOST PERFECT little camera and will just string it up from a light fixture to make a mobile out of it (or use it as a pinata??).

AAAGHHHH, damn you, Fuji for teasing us!!!!

I've just read thru this entire site of posts from you all, and with this much evidence in conjunction with my own experiences (and those of my sis, who also has one), I will never, ever buy another Fuji camera, and will continue to have no problems whatsoever spreading the word to others who are looking to buy.
