HP Brings a Street Photography Gallery to Arles
ARLES, France, 3 July, 2007 – HP today announced the winner of its online Street Photography competition at the prestigious Rencontres d’Arles Photography festival, where the winning entrants will have their photographs exhibited.
Street Photography at Arles
The winner German Eduardo Hernández Saavedra from El Salvador was chosen from more than 10,500 entries and wins a paid-for trip to the festival, including an exclusive dinner and portfolio review with Stuart Franklin with an opportunity to gain valuable insights into Franklin’s work.
Franklin, renowned Magnum photographer and the current president of the celebrated international photographic cooperative1 judged the competition.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed judging the street photography competition that HP has supported; the standard and quality of pictures entered has been phenomenal. It is great to see such enormous enthusiasm and talent for street photography,” said Franklin.
Entrants to the competition came from 79 different countries ranging from Azerbaijan to Venezuela, and 30 of the best images have been selected by Franklin to be printed on HP Z-series Photo printers and exhibited at the Hotel Arlatan for the duration of the festival, which runs from July 3 to September 16. “The originality and variety of the images submitted by photographers proves this to be an evolving area of documentary photography,“ said Francois Martin, marketing manager, Graphic Arts, HP EMEA.
The Street Photography exhibition is printed on the Z-series Photo printers which include the 8-colour Z2100, 12-ink Z3100 and brand new Z6100 which use pigment ink and world-first technologies such as an inbuilt spectrophotometer. The combination of these technologies and premium HP papers such as HP Satin Premium Instant Dry photo paper ensures that the 30 finalists’ images are museum-quality with 200 years’ fade resistance.2
“HP has been a partner of the Rencontres d’Arles for the past three years and values this festival as the ideal location to exhibit these photographs. We are proud to demonstrate in Arles how professional photographers can combine their unique talent with versatile HP solutions to expand their creativity,” said Martin.
Street Photography Online
The street photography gallery www.hypegallery.com/streetphotography was launched in March 2007 with a street photography workshop delivered by Franklin at Magnum’s headquarters in London.
Building on the success of HP’s HYPE galleries, the Street Photography gallery encourages photographers to look at the urban landscape in innovative or unusual ways. Cracks in the pavement, peeling walls or shadows cast by stairwells could all be included in Street Photography.
The gallery works in a similar way to the HYPE galleries, through which thousands of participants have exhibited their work online and seen them printed to a professional standard on HP Z-series printers in capital cities across the world including London, Berlin, Paris and Singapore. The most recent HYPE event in Berlin in November 2006 had 13,000 visitors to the exhibition and 60,000 unique visitors to the online gallery.
The online street photography gallery will continue to run for the rest of the year creating a comprehensive collection of Street Photography.
