Nikon D40 Review

Nikon D40The Nikon D40 digital SLR camera with an 18-55mm kit lens is currently available for less than $600 / £400, making it one of the cheapest DSLRs around. But price isn’t the only attraction of the D40, as we find out in our latest review.

  1. Good writeup on the camera Mark. Can' wait to read your review of the Olympus E-400 now!

  2. I'm considering the D40 and the D80. Will the D40 be enough? I've been reading the discussions at:
    http://www.vsxl.com/cameras/Nikon_D40_vs_Nikon_D80.html
    and came across this review.

Leigh at 09:54pm on Tuesday, January 23, 2007

  3. Zoltan, our E-400 review will be out tomorrow smile

Leigh, what exactly will you be using the camera for?

  4. Good news Mark!

  5. Great review, Mark! smile

  6. Good review. I personally would get the D40 over the D80. Disregard the fact that D80 has 10.2 MP compared to D40's 6MP. This doesn't make a differenct regarding the quality of the image when shooting in RAW (atleast to the naked eye). http://www.prodigy-studios.com

  7. Mark, great very detailed and thorough review, I needed confidence boosting on moving from 35mm Nikon, this has provided it. Thanks. Nearly bought a D50 earlier this week , glad I waited.

  8. Excellent review, just the right level of detail. ULEAD PhotoImpact 12 opens the NEF files with no problem at all and provides excellent facilities.

  9. This is a great review, thank you very much!

I am very much an amateur photgrapher and very much looking to move forward a step after ordering the D40 last week. I have owned two other digi's, a Kodak DC210 and for the past four years a Fuji S304.

If anyone can help with a beginners guide to all the manual features (would need to cover from absolute basics)that would be much appeciated. I dont even know what a f number is!

Anyway, thanks for the review it was very, very useful!

  10. You can find a great user guide at this address

  11. Thanks for that!

Anyone got a pointer for Newbies/Beginners guide to photography, please?

Richie at 08:39am on Thursday, August 30, 2007

  12. Also - I bought mine from Amazon for £318 (August 2007) and I have the £60 Nikon cashback too) So all this for £258 - bit of a wow!

Richie at 08:41am on Thursday, August 30, 2007

  13. Mark - congratulations on your superb D40 review! If anyone's interested, I've created two lists of lenses that will AF (autofocus) on the D40. One list for Nikon Nikkor lenses: http://nikond40.dpnotes.com/nikkor-lenses-that-af-on-the-d40/, and the other for Sigma HSM lenses: http://nikond40.dpnotes.com/nikon-d40-and-sigma-lenses/

  14. Be warned - if you think the Nikon cashback offer is a good deal, have a look at disgruntled customers at http://www.northumbrian.org.uk/rob/?p=860

  15. Can the lens (fisheye, long range, etc.) used with a Nikon 100 body (film) - (circa 1999) be used with the D40 digital ??

billbsailing at 07:32pm on Saturday, November 24, 2007

  16. Add me to the list of disgruntled customers. I never received my cashback and have written an article about it on my website :
