Nikon D70s Review

Nikon D70sThe Nikon D70s is an updated version of the extremely popular D70 digital SLR camera. The 6 megapixel D70s offers a number of improvements when compared to its predecessor. The autofocus system has been refined, there is a larger 2 inch LCD monitor, a remote cable port has been added, the built-in flash offers a wider angle of coverage and there is an all-new graphical user interface. Nikon are continuing to sell the older D70, so the new D70s currently sits above the cheaper and simpler D50 and the D70 in the Nikon DSLR pecking order in terms of features and price. This is the first Nikon digital SLR that I have reviewed (regular readers will know that I use a Canon DSLR), so what did I make of the new Nikon D70s? Read my review to find out.

  1. Not to detract from your five star review, but I think it should be a law that if a camera manufacturer updates a model with nothing more than a letter added to the previous model designation (and in this case, a lower case letter, at that), they should offer to users of the previous model a reasonably priced "full replacement" upgrade path, not just a firmware upgrade. Okay, maybe not a law, but at least a strong precedent. smile

Mark, if you do not mind me asking, how much time do you spend on managing this website, and does it interfere with your passion for photography?

The reason I ask is this. Not only do you search the many websites you do for daily information (which I tried doing myself while you were on vacation, and found it to be extremely time consuming and tedious), but you also prepare your own reviews of numerous products, and it appears that you scan each and every comment posted on this website, and then attempt to answer all questions posed to you by comment, as well as by email, not to mention all the contests, and then the newsletter, plus all the advertising and other business dealings.

Whew !!! They must have longer days in France. smile

  2. The trick is in RSS (if only more sites would have it available)

I can scan for new stuff on 300 sites in 5 to 10min. It would take days without feed aggregators.

  3. RSS ... hmmmm. I had seen articles on RSS previously, but never paid them much attention. However, after reading your comment, I did some research. I see what you mean. RSS would be an enormous timesaver !!!

Still, on this website, Mark includes his own brief synopsis of the feed, so that means he has to scan and digest each feed. And what about feeds from Spanish, Czech, Norwegian, etc., websites? Do they come through in English, or do they have to be translated? And what about accompanying pictures? Are they part of the RSS feed (which from what I could see is text only), or are they added manually? Also, keep in mind, news feeds are just one aspect of this website. What about the other aspects mentioned above?

Okay, so maybe France does not have more hours in the day, but I would bet that if you took a picture of Mark, you would find significant red-eye, even in the daylight. smile

  6. A fantastic review, I have gone ahead and bought the camera and just returned from eurodisney with 600 photographs. What superb quality. I am ecstatic with the buy. My kids like to watch the slide show which lasts for about an hour. The photography varied from disney land itself to dark photographies involving dragons producing smoke and mid air stunts. This is in a different league compared to my previous zoom digital camera (not SLR). Most importantly I am learning photography at the same time as experiment wiht different shutter speeds/ apertures and see the results instantaneously.

Just one little thing to add, easygadget.co.uk sells the body at around 560 pounds. i bought from them as they were the cheapest. I already had a couple of nikon lens from the F80.

  8. Very interesting review. I bought mine today in Jessops New Oxford St, London, UK in a kit with the 18-70mm lens a Lexar Pro 1GB 80x CF card for £645! They do indeed price match.

  9. A very thorough review, that persuaded me to purchase the camera, despite having a lifelong affinity with Canon. And my initial experience mirrors the conclusions of the reviewer - a great quality camera that is easy to use, very high quality and with a whole host of customiseable features. I've just bought one from Jessops at the bargain price of £450 with the excellent 18-70mm 3.5-4.5G DX lens.
