Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 £599 in UK
The UK price of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 has now been confirmed. At the UK press launch held at Wembley stadium yesterday, Panasonic revealed that the World’s first Micro Four Thirds camera will cost £599 when it launches on 1st November. Various deals will be available to retailers, including a £50 cash-back, free 3 year warranty and a 1/2 price second lens, so the street price of the G1 may well fall to £499 before too long. The 45-200mm telephoto lens will cost £329.99 and also be available on 1st November. In the US, the price has been confirmed as $699 (both quoted prices are for the G1 with the 14-45mm kit lens).

Lim, I personally went to the Panasonic UK press launch yesterday - trust me, that's the official price.
Just to prove it, here's another couple of sites with exactly the same pricing:

Thanks for the info
Can't see them shifting many even at £499 apart from to those with more money than sense who simply must have the latest gadgets. Plenty of entry level DSLRs to attract the price concious consumer before considering this. The Nikon D40/D60, Sony Alpha A200, Pentax K200D/K1000 are all less than £400 with a single lens and have the bigger APS-C sensor so (in theory) better IQ at high ISOs and shallower depth-of-field when desired.
At the end of the day you'll still need a bag to carry this around in so not much advantage gained from a slightly smaller size.
Now if it had arrived with video then yes that may have warranted an extra £100 or so over the competition.

D60 is around 500gr, A200 530gr, K200 690gr (just body)and sizes are in proportion (would say 30% ?). The G1 is 385gr, the only SLR with Oly E-420, you can fit in a small bag or even in a large pocket (lens apart). That's the reason we are talkin' of novelty value.
regards
(I apologize for my basic english)

I still think it's a high premium to pay for 20-25% less weight (0% compared to E420!) and unless fitted with a pancake lens won't be much smaller than a D40/60 or K2000 - Nikon D40 is 490g and costs £220 with lens from Amazon, it has fewer novelty features of course but has great IQ. The new K2000 is 525g with rrp £399 with lens and external flash.
The G1 has fewer parts no mirror etc, it should cost less
I'm sure the price will come down in due course.

If you say we pay for innovations, for sure ! In 1888 George Eastman patented and started to sell at 25$ (400$ today)the first film camera. Why should have paid much more for a camera without a wide and reliable dry plate ???
Next year G1 will cost less ?
Of course, maybe 50$ less.
Given the present state of affairs, I don't know where my 50$ will be next year, so I'll smash my piggybank.
Ippy Yee-haw !

I would think that when you buy this you're looking at a buy into a Leica orientated system. Those who use and have loved Leica might in fact look at this is a bargain. This also is quite an innovative product; a non-SLR with interchangeable lens. This sort of innovation carries a value of it's own. But maybe more importantly this takes the Panasonic/Lieca marriage closer to the classic Lieca as used by Robert Frank et al?
Then again, the Leica audience are unlikely to ever consider a camera like a D40, so for that market, there is no theoretical competition, maybe they could even charge more?
